Global Perspective of Drought Impacts on Ozone Pollution Episodes

Yadong Lei et al.

Summary: Ozone pollution threatens global public health and ecosystem productivity, and droughts modulate surface ozone through meteorological processes and vegetation feedback. Accelerated photochemical rates dominate surface ozone enhancement during droughts, except in eastern U.S. and western Europe where reduced stomatal uptakes make comparable contributions. Increased droughts offset 43% of the effects from air pollution control, highlighting the need for more stringent control of ozone precursors to mitigate the higher risks of ozone pollution episodes caused by droughts in a warming world.

Unprecedented decline in summertime surface ozone over eastern China in 2020 comparably attributable to anthropogenic emission reductions and meteorology

Hao Yin et al.

Summary: China's nationwide monitoring network has shown that urban summertime surface ozone levels increased by about 5% annually from 2013 to 2019, with a significant reduction observed in eastern China cities in May-August 2020. This reduction was mainly driven by changes in anthropogenic emissions and weather conditions, highlighting the effectiveness of current emission control strategies in ozone mitigation. The study suggests the potential of combining atmospheric chemical models with machine learning for better understanding and managing ozone drivers.

Pathways of China's PM2.5 air quality 2015-2060 in the context of carbon neutrality

Jing Cheng et al.

Summary: According to the study, China can achieve its near-term climate goals by 2030 through fulfilling its National Determined Contributions (NDC) pledges and continuing air pollution control policies. However, reducing PM2.5 exposure to below 10 μg/m3 for the majority of the Chinese population by 2060 may require more ambitious climate mitigation efforts, such as China's carbon neutrality goals and global 1.5 degrees C-pathways. The research highlights the critical role of China's carbon neutrality goals in reducing air pollution exposure to the level of the World Health Organization guidelines and protecting public health.

Spatiotemporal variation of surface ozone and its causes in Beijing, China since 2014

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: The study revealed the spatiotemporal distribution and variations of surface ozone in Beijing from 2014 to 2020. The maximum ozone concentrations decreased slightly, but some monitoring sites in urban and suburban areas showed significant positive trends. The high ozone value areas shifted from the northern suburbs to the northeastern and southwestern suburbs and the east of the central urban area.

Identifying the spatiotemporal variations in ozone formation regimes across China from 2005 to 2019 based on polynomial simulation and causality analysis

Ruiyuan Li et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that since 2013, the ozone formation regime across China has shifted to transitional and NOx-limited modes, primarily controlled by NOx. However, in this scenario, the increase in volatile organic compounds has become the main driver for rising ozone pollution in China. Therefore, for effective ozone pollution management, emission reductions in both VOCs and NOx should be equally considered.
