In utero exposure to mixed PAHs causes heart mass reduction in adult male mice

Shenli Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that prenatal exposure to a mixture of PAHs can lead to a decrease in heart/body weight ratio in adult males, resulting in cardiac fiber loss and increased cell apoptosis. The underlying mechanisms involve the downregulation of TF01 and its downstream transcription factors, as well as the downregulation of PI3K and AKT leading to increased expression of apoptosis-related proteins. Differences in aromatic hydrocarbon receptor and sex hormone receptor levels between males and females also contribute to the distinct effects on the heart.

Source apportionment of PM2.5 and visibility in Jinan, China

Mengtian Cheng et al.

Summary: The chemical composition of PM2.5 in Jinan, China, is mainly influenced by sulfate, organic matter, and elemental carbon, which also dominate visibility. The primary sources of PM2.5 in the area, such as secondary particles and coal combustion, also play a significant role in visibility.

Relationship Between Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Cardiovascular Diseases: A Systematic Review

Manthar Ali Mallah et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to explore the relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). After analyzing 20 research articles, a positive association between PAH exposure and CVD risks was observed, providing valuable insights into this area of study.

A review on analysis methods, source identification, and cancer risk evaluation of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Lord Famiyeh et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmentally persistent, mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic compounds. This review discusses their sources, metabolism, temporal variations, and analytical methods for extraction and characterization. It recommends compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) for detailed source analysis, highlighting challenges and limitations in using stable carbon isotopic analysis (SCIA) for PAH source apportionment.

Photochemical Aging of Atmospheric Particulate Matter in the Aqueous Phase

Frank Leresche et al.

Summary: This study focused on the photoaging of PM2.5 in the aqueous phase, finding a seasonal variation in production rate (r(center dot OH)) and hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot), with lower values in winter and spring extracts and higher values in summer extracts. The photobleaching extent of the extracts was correlated with r(center dot OH), indicating non-(OH)-O-center dot processes took place. The half-life of compounds in the atmospheric aqueous phase was between 1.9 and 434 h based on measurements of hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen.

Concentration and atmospheric transport of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at Mount Tai, China

Zhongxiu Zhen et al.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a major threat to human health. Studies on PAHs have mainly focused on their concentration levels and source apportionment, with limited research on their vertical transport in the atmosphere. PAHs showed opposite diurnal trends at the summit and foot of Mount Tai, highlighting the importance of vertical transport in influencing their distribution in the atmosphere and potential health risks.
