An empirical model of electron temperatures in the Mars ionosphere based on Langmuir probe measurements in the descending phase of solar cycle 24

M. D. Pilinski et al.

Summary: Mars ionospheric temperatures show significant variability due to changes in solar irradiance, solar local time, season, and latitude. The relationship between ionospheric temperatures and neutral thermospheric density is crucial. The Temperature of electrons Specification for the Mars Ionosphere (TeSMI) was developed to evaluate and quantify these effects. The primary sources of variability were found to be neutral pressure, local solar time, and 17-22 nm irradiance, with additional corrections needed for seasonal and latitudinal changes.

Rate coefficients for the reactions of CO2+ with O: Lessons from MAVEN at Mars

Jane L. Fox et al.

Summary: The study found that the relative density distributions of the major ions CO2+, O-2(+), and O+ in the lower ionosphere of Mars are largely determined by three reactions, including two involving the reaction of CO2+ with O, and one involving the reaction of O+ with CO2. Additionally, rate coefficients measured 50 years ago were found to be much better at explaining the density profiles of O-2(+), CO2+, and O+ in the Martian ionosphere compared to those recently measured.
