OCCASO IV. Radial velocities and open cluster kinematics

R. Carrera et al.

Summary: This study utilized high-resolution spectra to determine the radial velocities of 336 stars and analyze the membership of 51 open clusters. The radial velocities of five clusters were determined for the first time. The kinematics and orbits of the observed clusters were studied using radial velocities, proper motions, distances, and ages.

Hunting for open clusters in Gaia EDR3: 628 new open clusters found with OCfinder

A. Castro-Ginard et al.

Summary: This study used Gaia EDR3 data and the OCfinder method to discover 628 new open clusters in the Galactic disc, with most of them located beyond 1 kpc from the Sun. Young clusters align along the Galactic spiral arms, while older clusters are dispersed in the disc, and most open clusters are located at low Galactic altitudes.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Membership probabilities for stars in 63 open and 7 globular clusters from 3D kinematics

R. J. Jackson et al.

Summary: Spectroscopy from the Gaia-ESO Survey has been combined with Gaia data to assign membership probabilities to targets towards 63 Galactic open clusters and 7 globular clusters. Most targets are identified as highly probable cluster members, and the inclusion of GES radial velocities helps reduce false positives. This study provides an ideal dataset for investigating the photometric and chemical properties of clusters.

Mapping the Galactic Metallicity Gradient with Open Clusters: The State-of-the-Art and Future Challenges

Lorenzo Spina et al.

Summary: In this paper, the data collected for open cluster members were analyzed as a whole, and the resulting catalogue contains [Fe/H] and orbital parameters for 251 Galactic open clusters. The study found that the slope of the radial metallicity gradient traced by open clusters flattens beyond a certain distance, and the slope traced by open clusters in the [Fe/H]-Lz diagram also flattens beyond a certain velocity.

One Star to Tag Them All (OSTTA) I. Radial velocities and chemical abundances for 20 poorly studied open clusters

R. Carrera et al.

Summary: This study aims to increase the number of open clusters with radial velocities and chemical abundances determined from high resolution spectroscopy by sampling a few stars in previously unstudied clusters. By observing and analyzing 41 stars, detailed chemical abundances were determined for 28 stars belonging to 17 clusters. These clusters were compared to well-studied clusters and found to follow similar trends in terms of chemical and kinematical properties.

Summary: This article provides an overview of the implementation, science results, and potential of the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey. The survey has successfully determined radial velocities, stellar parameters, and elemental abundances for a large sample of Galactic stars. The final catalogue of the survey, along with advanced data products, will be released in the first half of 2022.

Stellar Population Astrophysics (SPA) with the TNG Stock 2, a little-studied open cluster with an eMSTO

J. Alonso-Santiago et al.

Summary: Stock 2 is a little-studied open cluster that exhibits an extended main-sequence turnoff phenomenon. Through high-resolution spectroscopy, the cluster's age is estimated to be around 450Ma, with a solar-like metallicity and chemical composition similar to other open clusters in the Galactic thin-disc population.

The distribution of [α/Fe] in the Milky Way disc

Fiorenzo Vincenzo et al.

Summary: Using a sample of red giant stars from APOGEE Data Release 16, researchers infer the distribution of alpha-elements in the Milky Way disk and find that the high-alpha population is more prominent at smaller R, lower [Fe/H], and larger vertical bar z vertical bar. They also discover that the separation between Si and Ca is smaller than between Mg, O, and S. The study highlights the need for sharp transitions in the disk's gas accretion, star formation, or outflow history to explain the observed bimodality.

The GALAH survey: tracing the Galactic disc with open clusters

L. Spina et al.

Summary: Open clusters serve as unique tracers of the chemical distribution in the Galactic disc, showing an age-metallicity relation with less scatter than field stars. Our analysis revealed a radial metallicity gradient of -0.076 ± 0.009 dex kpc(-1) and a gradient in the (Fe/H)-guiding radius plane of -0.073 ± 0.008 dex kpc(-1), consistent with previous works. Our results also highlight trends in the [X/Fe]-r(guid)-age space, providing important insights into the production rates of different elements over space and time.

The Gaia-ESO survey: Mixing processes in low-mass stars traced by lithium abundance in cluster and field stars

L. Magrini et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate mixing processes in low-mass stars by observing the behavior of lithium surface abundance after the main sequence. It uses data from Gaia-ESO IDR6 and Gaia EDR3s to analyze main-sequence, sub-giant, and giant stars. The comparison with stellar evolution models shows that rotation-induced mixing and thermohaline instability are key factors affecting lithium abundance trends.

Gaia-ESO survey: Lithium abundances in open cluster Red Clump stars

L. Magrini et al.

Summary: The study found that about 35% of red clump (RC) stars have lithium abundances similar to or higher than red giant branch (RGB) stars, indicating a possible sign of fresh lithium production. However, lithium content in about 65% of RC giants could only be determined as upper limits, potentially hiding very low lithium content.

Chemical enrichment and radial migration in the Galactic disc - the origin of the [α/Fe] double sequence

Sanjib Sharma et al.

Summary: The distribution of Milky Way stars in terms of ([alpha/Fe], [Fe/H]) shows at least two distinct sequences, related to the thin and thick disc components. An analytical chemodynamical model has been proposed to explain this phenomenon, showing advantages over earlier models. The model successfully reproduces the systematic variation of abundance distribution with location and vertical position across the Galaxy.
