An Atomic Spectral Survey of WASP-76b: Resolving Chemical Gradients and Asymmetries

Aurora Y. Kesseli et al.

Summary: In this study, we observed the nonuniformity of ultrahot Jupiter atmospheres using high-resolution transit transmission spectroscopy and discovered multiple atoms/ions that have not been reported before. By studying the asymmetries in the observed signals, we proposed different explanations and a new atmospheric model, which contribute to our understanding of atmospheric dynamics in highly irradiated planets.

Searching for the origin of the Ehrenreich effect in ultra-hot Jupiters Evidence for strong C/O gradients in the atmosphere of WASP-76 b?

A. Sanchez-Lopez et al.

Summary: Extreme temperature contrasts between the day and nightside of ultra-hot Jupiters result in significantly asymmetric atmospheres. This study observes the transit of WASP-76 b and finds that the composition and appearance of the planet's atmosphere change during different stages of the transit. Formal detections of water vapor and hydrogen cyanide are observed, but their positions in the KP-vsys diagram are significantly different, suggesting variations in atmospheric conditions. These observations indicate the potential for spatial characterization of different molecules and nightside condensation.

Variable and Supersonic Winds in the Atmosphere of an Ultrahot Giant Planet

Anusha Pai Asnodkar et al.

Summary: This article studies the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter KELT-9 b and finds high-speed day-to-nightside winds, contrary to previous studies. The authors attribute the discrepancy to an inaccurate ephemeris and resolve it by updating the ephemeris. Furthermore, a comparison with archival data reveals temporal variability in wind speeds over years.

The atmosphere of HD 209458b seen with ESPRESSO No detectable planetary absorptions at high resolution

N. Casasayas-Barris et al.

Summary: The study used high-resolution ESPRESSO spectrograph to observe two transits of the gas giant HD 209458b, finding features in the planetary transmission spectrum at wavelengths corresponding to strong absorption lines in the parent star. They did not detect any planetary absorption, including previously reported NaI, in the atmosphere of HD 209458b. The high signal-to-noise ratio in the transmission spectrum allows for comparisons of different one-dimensional stellar atmospheric models.

Time-resolved Rotational Velocities in the Upper Atmosphere of WASP-33 b

P. Wilson Cauley et al.

Summary: This study presents the first detection of Balmer lines H alpha and H beta in the atmosphere of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-33 b. By analyzing transmission spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio, the researchers were able to measure rotational and wind velocities, highlighting the importance of detailed 3D global climate simulations for understanding the upper atmospheres of ultra-hot gas giants. The results confirm the power of time-resolved transmission spectra in measuring velocity structures in exoplanet atmospheres.

Into the storm: diving into the winds of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76 b with HARPS and ESPRESSO

J. Seidel et al.

Summary: This study provides a clearer picture of atmospheric dynamics for ultra-hot Jupiters based on the example of WASP-76 b. Results suggest that WASP-76 b has an isothermal atmosphere, with uniform winds in the lower atmosphere and vertical winds in the upper atmosphere. The study highlights the importance of vertical winds in the intermediate atmosphere to explain the line broadening of the sodium doublet in this planet.

An inventory of atomic species in the atmosphere of WASP-121b using UVES high-resolution spectroscopy

Stephanie R. Merritt et al.

Summary: Ultrahot Jupiters (UHJs), with their hot temperatures and inflated atmospheres, are ideal for transmission spectroscopy. Recent studies using high-resolution spectra have identified numerous atomic species in UHJs, providing insights into their atmospheric structure and composition. Through cross-correlation methods, a systematic search for atomic species in the atmosphere of UHJ WASP-121b revealed potential signals of 17 atomic species, with five strong detections, three tentative detections, and nine weak signals identified for further exploration.
