Investigation of the Deformation Behaviour and Resulting Ply Thicknesses of Multilayered Fibre-Metal Laminates

Missam Irani et al.

Summary: Multilayered fibre-metal laminates combine the advantages of metal and fibre-reinforced plastics, making them suitable for mass production of lightweight structures. Increasing processing temperature can improve formability of light metal sheets, but limitations arise from melting of thermoplastic materials and loss of stiffness. Different through-thickness stiffnesses of single-ply layers impact the ply thickness of multilayered laminates during forming.

The Perforation Resistance of Aluminum-Based Thermoplastic FMLs

Nassier. A. Nassir et al.

Summary: The study investigates the perforation resistance of FMLs made of GF/PEKK composite and aluminium alloy. It found that processing temperature affects the tensile strength of the aluminium alloy, and that FMLs exhibit rate-sensitivity under dynamic loading, absorbing impact energy through plastic deformation, tearing, and delamination. Finite element models accurately predicted the behavior of FMLs and matched experimental results in terms of stiffness, maximum force, displacement, and perforation mechanisms.

Testing Procedure for Fatigue Characterization of Steel-CFRP Hybrid Laminate Considering Material Dependent Self-Heating

Selim Mrzljak et al.

Summary: Combining carbon fiber reinforced polymers with steel can utilize the desired characteristics of both materials, but gradual failure in hybrid laminates may affect mechanical properties, requiring a suitable testing procedure for characterization. Residual stresses induced during manufacturing in such laminates were found to impact load-bearing capacity, highlighting the importance of considering this factor in addition to the testing procedure for measuring fatigue performance.
