First report on the occurrence of white spot syndrome virus, infectious myonecrosis virus and Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei in Penaeus vannamei reared in freshwater systems

Selvam Suryakodi et al.

Summary: Samples of white leg shrimp from freshwater ponds in Tamil Nadu, India were screened for viral and fungal pathogens. A new highly virulent strain of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) was detected, along with infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) and Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP). Experimental infection studies showed 100% mortality in shrimp infected with WSSV or IMNV. EHP was detected in experimentally infected shrimp, but no clinical signs were observed.

Genome (in)stability at tandem repeats

Elisa Balzano et al.

Summary: Repeated sequences make up more than half of the human genome and play a significant role in various physiological and pathological conditions. Tandem repeats, a major category of repetitive DNA in the human genome, have a higher mutation rate and are prone to aberrant recombination, leading to associations with a variety of diseases.

Shrimp disease management for sustainable aquaculture: innovations from nanotechnology and biotechnology

P. S. Seethalakshmi et al.

Summary: Shrimp farming worldwide faces significant challenges due to infectious diseases, with antibiotic therapy becoming controversial due to rising antibiotic resistance. Innovative solutions from nanotechnology and biotechnology, such as nanoparticles, biofilm-based vaccines, algal extracts, phytobiotics, probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics, offer promising alternatives to combat infectious diseases in aquaculture.

Multiple roles of ABC transporters in yeast

Sonam Kumari et al.

Summary: ABC transporters were first identified as high-affinity nutrient importers in bacteria, but later became known for their ability to confer multidrug resistance to cancer cells. These proteins exist in fungi in variable numbers and locations, playing important roles in clearing xenobiotics and transporting structurally unrelated substances.

Host-Diet Effect on the Metabolism of Bifidobacterium

Maria Satti et al.

Summary: The distribution of GH genes in bifidobacterial species is more closely related to the hosts' dietary pattern than to the phylogeny of the host animals or genomic features. Therefore, the hosts' dietary behavior plays a crucial role in determining the distribution and evolution of GH genes.
