Rich resource environment of fish farms facilitates phenotypic variation and virulence in an opportunistic fish pathogen

Katja Pulkkinen et al.

Summary: This study found that the intensive farming environment induces higher phenotypic variation in fish pathogens compared to the natural environment. The study also observed that phenotypic variation is driven by the exploitation of increased outside-host resources at farms. Furthermore, the study suggests that environmental conditions at fish farms could select isolates with high phenotypic variation in bacterial population and thus affect the evolution of F. columnare at fish farms.

Shrimp AHPND Causing Vibrio anguillarum Infection: Quantitative Diagnosis and Identifying Antagonistic Bacteria

Huiyu Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal succession of shrimp gut microbiota during Vibrio anguillarum challenge, confirming the linear increase of pathogen abundance and irreversible disruption in the shrimp gut microbiota over AHPND progression. The predicted functional pathways involved in immunity and metabolism decreased significantly, while those facilitating infectious diseases enriched in the infected shrimp. 20 infection-discriminatory taxa were identified as independent variables for accurately diagnosing V. anguillarum infection, even at the early infection stage. Furthermore, several Vibrio and Pseudoalteromonas taxa were identified as antagonistic commensals of V. anguillarum, potentially serving as candidate probiotics for preventing AHPND.

Multiple functions of flagellar motility and chemotaxis in bacterial physiology

Remy Colin et al.

Summary: Swimming bacteria can follow gradients of nutrients and signaling molecules for optimal growth, with chemotaxis enhancing efficiency in environmental colonization. The balance between individual and collective behaviors is crucial, with multiple roles of motility and chemotaxis in bacterial swarming, biofilm formation, and interactions with hosts.
