Ab Initio Study of Octane Moiety Adsorption on H- and Cl-Functionalized Silicon Nanowires

Barbara Ferrucci et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory calculations, the effects of surface functionalization on the energy and electronic properties of hydrogenated and chlorinated silicon nanowires were investigated. The band structure was found to be strongly influenced by the nanowire diameter, while the passivation species led to substantial changes in the formation energy. Absorption of an octane moiety on the silicon nanowire surfaces did not substantially affect the electronic properties, with no generation of energy levels within the band gap and a moderate change in the band gap. However, a significant charge transfer from the silicon nanowires to the octane moiety was calculated.

Silicon Suboxides as Driving Force for Efficient Light-Enhanced Hydrogen Generation on Silicon Nanowires

Tingsen Ming et al.

Summary: This study reported efficient light-stimulated hydrogen generation from highly doped n-type silicon nanowires (SiNWs) combined with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in water-containing medium under white light irradiation. The SiNWs with AgNPs generated at least 2.5 times more hydrogen than those without AgNPs, and the SiNWs' sidewalls were found to be covered by silicon suboxides with stable semiconductor properties. Based on synchrotron studies, the increase in the silicon bandgap was attributed to the energetically beneficial position of the valence band in nanostructured silicon, making them promising structures for efficient hydrogen generation.

Chaos at Interface Brings Order into Oxide/Silicon Structure

Dmitry V. Averyanov et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the integration of oxides with silicon, particularly emphasizing the direct EuO/Si contact. An alternative route, different from traditional methods, was successfully used to address the issue of atomically sharp interfaces in single-crystalline epitaxial films. The results not only represent tangible progress in manufacturing EuO/Si contacts, but also provide a general framework for the monolithic integration of functional oxides with semiconductors.

Interface issues of lithium metal anode for high-energy batteries: Challenges, strategies, and perspectives

Yiyao Han et al.

Summary: Lithium metal is considered one of the most promising materials for future high-energy-density storage systems, but its practical application is hindered by interfacial and air instabilities. Recent efforts have overcome many bottlenecks and accelerated the application of high-energy-density lithium metal batteries.
