Basic silica catalysts for the efficient dehydration of biomass-derived compounds - Elucidating structure-activity relationships for Na2O/SiO2-type materials

Harilal Krishna et al.

Summary: The gas-phase dehydration of biomass-derived N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone using Na2O/SiO2-type catalysts offers a promising route to producing high-value polyvinylpyrrolidone. Through optimization of the catalysts and in-depth characterization, it was found that the activity of the catalyst is influenced by a balance between weak basic sites and surface hydroxyls, with the optimal synthesis procedure depending on the type of parent silica. This renewed understanding has expanded the application of Na2O/SiO2 materials to the dehydration of other biomass-derived chemicals in the polymer industry.

Pavlo Kyriienko et al.

Summary: A series of ZnO/MgO-SiO2 systems with different MgO:SiO2 ratios were studied for their catalytic performance in 1,3-butadiene production, showing that water presence can decrease C-C coupling products but hydrated sites remain active in the reaction. High 1,3-butadiene selectivity was achieved with MgO:SiO2 ratios of (1:1) and (3:1) in the catalysts.

Zinc oxide-modified mordenite as an effective catalyst for the dehydrogenation of (bio)ethanol to acetaldehyde†

Samuel J. Raynes et al.

Summary: In this study, a catalyst system consisting of ZnO supported on alkali cation-exchanged mordenite was developed for the direct dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. The optimized catalyst showed excellent selectivity and stability beyond 120 hours of operation, with high acetaldehyde productivity and selectivity. The use of a zeolite support greatly improved the efficiency of Zn atoms and led to low ethylene selectivity and extended lifetimes in the reaction, which has not been reported previously.
