Luminescent colloidal ceria nanoparticles doped with RE3+ ions (RE = Eu, Tb) via cation exchange mechanism

V Seminko et al.

Summary: The high anionic conductivity in cerium oxide materials makes them promising for solid oxide fuel cells, while cation mobility is relatively low. However, cation exchange between Ce3+ and RE3+ ions was observed in ceria nanoparticles, leading to the formation of RE3+-doped nanoceria with increasing luminescence intensity. The dynamics of RE3+ luminescence intensity increase suggests a key role of Ce3+-Vo-Ce3+ complexes in the incorporation of RE3+ ions into ceria nanoparticles.

Surface-sensitive magnetism of mesoscopic hollow CeO2 spheres

Pei-Kai Hsu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the magnetism of mesoscopic hollow ceria spheres with different defect distribution characteristics. The surface structure and defect content of the spheres are controlled by reaction with HNO3 and annealing, leading to different magnetic properties. The surface plays a major role in the magnetic behavior of the spheres, with smoother surface defective layers resulting in stronger magnetism.
