Designing of Efficient Bifunctional ORR/OER Pt Single-Atom Catalysts Based on O-Terminated MXenes by First-Principles Calculations

Dongxiao Kan et al.

Summary: MXenes are utilized as substrate materials for single-atom catalysts (SACs) due to their unique two-dimensional structure, high surface area, and high electronic conductivity. This study identified the use of O-terminated MXenes as substrates may weaken the catalytic activity of Pt, leading to the successful construction of bifunctional Pt SACs by adjusting the electronic structure of MXenes. Moreover, practical application factors such as overpotential, solvation effect, and reaction barriers were considered to screen out four high-performance bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) catalysts originated from Cr-based MXenes.

Ruthenium Core-Shell Engineering with Nickel Single Atoms for Selective Oxygen Evolution via Nondestructive Mechanism

Ahmad M. Harzandi et al.

Summary: Understanding the sluggish and destructive mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the development of effective electrocatalytic splitting of acidic water. Catalysts composed of metallic Ru-core, oxidized Ru-shell, and Ni single atoms show enhanced activity and stability, providing current density and sustaining water oxidation in strongly acidic media. The designed catalysts follow distinctive acid-base (AB) and direct-coupling (DC) lattice oxygen mechanisms (LOMs) and adsorbates evolution mechanism (AEM) depending on surface-defect engineering conditions.

Rational Design of Highly Stable and Active MXene-Based Bifunctional ORR/OER Double-Atom Catalysts

Bo Wei et al.

Summary: Designing highly active and bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with non-noble metals such as Fe/Co/Ni on MXene surfaces has shown superior performance compared to traditional unifunctional catalysts, providing a novel pathway for tunable catalytic behavior in MXenes. The electronic structure analyses revealed that the excellent catalytic activities in MXene-based DACs are attributed to the electron-capturing capability and synergistic interactions between Fe/Co/Ni adsorbents and MXene substrate. These findings not only suggest promising candidates for MXene-based bifunctional ORR/OER catalysts but also offer new theoretical insights into rationally designing noble-metal-free bifunctional DACs.
