Direct Synthesis of Sulfur-Decorating PAMAM Dendrimer/Mesoporous Silica for Enhanced Hg(II) and Cd(II) Adsorption

Liping Luan et al.

Summary: Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer-based adsorbents have been developed for efficient removal of metal ions. However, the traditional fabrication method resulted in adsorbents with low density, uneven distribution, pore blocking, and reduced adsorption performance. In this study, methylisothiocyanate decorated PAMAM dendrimer/mesoporous silica composites were synthesized, demonstrating enhanced adsorption properties for Hg(II) and Cd(II) compared to traditionally prepared adsorbents. The adsorbents also exhibited excellent selective adsorption and regeneration properties.

Enhancing Cd(II) adsorption on rice straw biochar by modification of iron and manganese oxides

Wen-Tao Tan et al.

Summary: Metal oxide-modified biochar showed excellent adsorption performance in wastewater treatment. In this study, iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) oxide-modified biochar (BC-FM) was synthesized using rice straw biochar, and its adsorption process, removal effect, and mechanism of cadmium (Cd) adsorption in wastewater treatment were investigated. The results demonstrated that BC-FM had a significantly higher adsorption capacity for Cd compared to other modified biochars mentioned in the literature. The Cd adsorption by BC-FM followed a spontaneous chemical adsorption mechanism. Additionally, BC-FM exhibited good reusability and stability. Therefore, metal oxide-modified biochar can be an efficient adsorbent for treating Cd-contaminated wastewater.

Adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions using carboxyl/nitro-functionalized microparticles derived from polypropylene waste

Ahmed Bakry et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using waste polypropylene film to prepare functionalized polypropylene microparticles for the adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The results showed that increasing polymer dosage, pH, and contact time improved the removal of methylene blue from water. The kinetic and equilibrium studies suggested that the adsorption process followed a chemisorption mechanism, with a maximum adsorption capacity achieved under specific temperature and pH conditions.

Synthesis and application of amine-functionalized MgFe2O4-biochar for the adsorption and immobilization of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Anyu Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized an amine-functionalized magnesium ferrite-biochar composite and investigated its performance and mechanisms for removing or immobilizing heavy metals in wastewater and polluted soils. The mechanisms in wastewater treatment primarily involved complexation and ion exchange, while in soils polluted by heavy metals, immobilization was achieved through electrostatic attraction, precipitation, and complexation. This new type of biochar composite has shown effectiveness in simultaneously removing and immobilizing heavy metals in wastewater and soil.

Enhanced removal of Cd2+ by nano zero-valent iron modified attapulgite from aqueous solution: Optimal design, characterization and adsorption mechanism

Liang Dai et al.

Summary: Nano zero-valent iron modified attapulgite composite showed excellent potential for the removal of Cd2+ from contaminated water. The composite material exhibited high removal efficiency for Cd2+ in aqueous solutions and outperformed attapulgite. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model, with chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. The removal process was spontaneous and endothermic, accompanied by an increase in entropy. The presence of other metal ions in the solution strongly inhibited the removal of Cd2+. The mechanism of Cd2+ removal involved surface-complexation adsorption and precipitation/coprecipitation.

Fatma Dhaouadi et al.

Summary: A heterogeneous physical model with two binding sites successfully explained the adsorption of Cd2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+ ions on flamboyant pods functionalized with citric acid, highlighting the crucial roles of specific functional groups in the adsorbent. Adsorption was more effective at high temperatures, suggesting an endothermic process associated with physisorption, making it suitable for treating water pollution by heavy metal ions.

Solution pH affects single, sequential and binary systems of sulfamethoxazole and cadmium adsorption by self-assembled cellulose: Promotion or inhibition?

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the presence of Cd(II) decreased the adsorption of SMZ due to hydrophilic site competition, while SMZ increased the adsorption of Cd(II) through bridging and electrostatic shielding effects. This inhibitory and synergistic effects were more pronounced in the binary system at a pH of 7.5, indicating a dynamic balance between them depending on the system, pH value, and concentration ratio. DFT results suggested that SMZ coordinated more easily with Cd(II) at sulfonyl oxygen and nitrogen sites, and the cationic bridge of Cd(II) with SMZ mainly occurred in the sequential system, with a complexation-decomplexation-complexation balance in the binary system.
