Conservation management decreases surface runoff and soil erosion

Xuan Du et al.

Summary: This study compares agricultural production with and without conservation management strategies and finds that conservation practices significantly reduce surface runoff and soil erosion. Cover cropping provides the best results in reducing erosion and surface runoff, and coarse- and medium-textured soils experience greater decreases in erosion and runoff compared to fine-textured soils. Additionally, surface runoff and soil erosion under conservation management are highly correlated with soil organic carbon, aggregation, porosity, infiltration, leaching, and yield.

Cover crops and controlled-release urea decrease need for mineral nitrogen fertilizer for cotton in sandy soil

Carlos Felipe dos Santos Cordeiro et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of controlled-release nitrogen fertilizers, applied N rate, and cover crops on cotton growth, yield, and fiber quality in sandy soils with low N content. The results show that using controlled-release urea and cover crops, especially mixtures of grasses and legumes, can improve cotton growth, yield, and fiber quality, as well as reduce the demand for nitrogen fertilizers.

Assembly processes of abundant and rare microbial communities in orchard soil under a cover crop at different periods

Zhiyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Soil microorganisms play important roles in agricultural ecosystems, but little is known about their dynamic diversity patterns and community assembly processes, especially in rare microbial biospheres in agricultural systems. In this study, the responses of diverse bacterial and fungal subcommunities to agricultural practices were explored in a semiarid orchard soil. The study found that bacterial and fungal subcommunities exhibited similar responses to cover crop or growth periods, with growth periods significantly altering the community structures. The assembly processes of abundant and rare taxa were influenced by factors such as soil nutrients and pH, providing new insights into microbial community formation.

Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and ammonia volatilization from cotton fields by integrating cover crops with reduced use of nitrogen fertilizer

Guilan Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of replacing traditional winter fallow with a cover crop combined with a reduced amount of nitrogen (N) fertilizer on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and cotton production yield. The results showed that this practice can mitigate ammonia (NH3) volatilization, GHG emissions, and increase cotton yield.

Glomalin and microbial activity affected by cover crops and nitrogen management in sandy soil with cotton cultivation

Carlos Felipe dos Santos Cordeiro et al.

Summary: The study suggests that cover crops can mitigate the negative effects of nitrogen fertilizers on microbial activity in sandy soils. Diverse cover crops, moderate nitrogen doses, and controlled-release urea can activate soil microbial and glomalin activity, ultimately improving cotton yield.

Changes in organic C stability within soil aggregates under different fertilization patterns in a greenhouse vegetable field

Luan Hao-an et al.

Summary: This study found that organic amendments increased the organic C content within soil aggregates, but reduced the chemical, spectroscopic, thermogravimetric, and biological stability of organic C compared to chemical fertilization alone. Within soil aggregates, the highest organic C content was found in microaggregates, followed by macroaggregates and silt/clay fractions.

Rhizobium Symbiotic Capacity Shapes Root-Associated Microbiomes in Soybean

Yuanhui Liu et al.

Summary: Root-microbiome interactions play a crucial role in plant performance and yield, particularly in legumes which engage in symbiosis with N-2-fixing rhizobia. The rhizobial symbiotic capacity was found to significantly alter root-associated microbiomes by impacting diversity, co-occurrence interactions, and microbial depletion in the rhizosphere and rhizoplane. Root exudates and soil physiochemical properties were closely correlated with microbial community shifts in response to different rhizobial treatments.

Digital image analysis estimates of biomass, carbon, and nitrogen uptake of winter cereal cover crops

S. Sunoj et al.

Summary: Over-wintering cereal cover crops contribute to greater cropping system sustainability by reducing erosion risk, adding carbon, and sequestering inorganic nitrogen. The study developed models to estimate shoot biomass from green cover and found that the Otsu method was the most effective. These models, combined with linear equations, can be used to estimate total biomass, C, and N uptake from imagery.

How soil biota regulate C cycling and soil C pools in diversified crop rotations

Kaile Zhang et al.

Summary: Agricultural intensification has led to reduced soil biodiversity and ecosystem functions, but sustainable agroecosystems with crop rotation can restore soil biodiversity and promote above-belowground interactions. Studying ecological networks, soil communities, and abiotic impacts simultaneously enhances our understanding of complex carbon cycling. Higher rotational diversity increases primary productivity and stimulates above-belowground interactions, strengthening soil functions and interactions between biotic and abiotic factors.

Meta-analysis of green manure effects on soil properties and crop yield in northern China

Dengke Ma et al.

Summary: The application of green manure in northern China has a positive impact on agriculture, improving soil quality, enhancing microbial activity, and increasing crop yields. Different types of green manure have varying effects on nutrient content, with legume green manure showing greater potential for nitrogen enhancement and non-legume green manure for potassium enrichment. It is a valuable agricultural practice that can be beneficial for sustainable crop production in the region.
