Structural Analysis of Molecular Materials Using the Pair Distribution Function

Maxwell W. Terban et al.

Summary: This article reviews the application of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis in the study of molecular materials. The PDF method is a powerful tool for investigating short- and intermediate-range order in nanoscale materials. It can provide structural details that are obscured in reciprocal space by defects, disorder, or structural ambiguities. While its use in inorganic and nanomaterials research has been highlighted, significant progress has also been made in applying PDF analysis to molecular materials such as carbon, pharmaceuticals, polymers, liquids, coordination compounds, and composites. The article provides an overview of applications in a wide variety of molecular compounds and systems, and offers pedagogical descriptions and tips for implementation.

Investigation of glass-ceramic lithium thiophosphate solid electrolytes using NMR and neutron scattering

Ethan C. Self et al.

Summary: Solid-state Li batteries require solid electrolytes with high Li+ conductivity and good compatibility with Li metal anodes and high-energy cathodes. This study combines diffraction measurements with ssNMR and nPDF analysis to probe the structure of glass-ceramic Li3PS4-based solid electrolytes. Different synthesis conditions affect the resulting polyanionic network, demonstrating a correlation between structures with high P coordination numbers and higher Li+ mobility. This work shows how ssNMR and nPDF can be used to draw key structure/function correlations for solid-state superionic conductors.

Structural Evolution and Transition Dynamics in Lithium Ion Battery under Fast Charging: An Operando Neutron Diffraction Investigation

Xianyang Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural evolution of Ni-rich LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC622) and graphite electrodes under different charging rates, revealing that NMC622 exhibits consistent structural changes regardless of the charging rate while the phase transitions of LixC6 are affected by the charging rate. The transition from stage II (LiC12) to stage I (LiC6) is identified as the rate-limiting step during fast charging, which is concluded as a diffusion-controlled, 1D phase transition with decreasing nucleation kinetics under increasing charging rates.

Anionic redox induced anomalous structural transition in Ni-rich cathodes

Jue Liu et al.

Summary: Ni-rich cathodes undergo a four-stage structural evolution during the initial cycle, with a universal structural transition occurring at around 75% delithiation. This transition, marked by an anomalous increase in average TM-O bond lengths, is induced by the direct oxidation of lattice oxygen ions. The onset of this transition correlates well with the release of oxygen gas and decline in capacity retention, highlighting its crucial role in the degradation process.
