Origin of the boson peak in amorphous solids

Yuan-Chao Hu et al.

Summary: Research reveals that the low-temperature physical properties of disordered amorphous solids differ significantly from those of ordered crystalline solids. The study identifies the microscopic origin of the excess vibrational density of states, known as the 'boson peak', as quasi-localized vibrations of string-like dynamical defects.

Single-defect phonons imaged by electron microscopy

Xingxu Yan et al.

Summary: The study shows that space- and angle-resolved vibrational spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope can map the vibrational spectra of individual crystal defects, revealing changes in energy and intensity of acoustic vibration modes restricted to a few nanometers around the defect. The capabilities of a state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope open the door to directly mapping phonon propagation around defects, offering valuable guidance for engineering the thermal properties of materials.

Boson-peak-like anomaly caused by transverse phonon softening in strain glass

Shuai Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers discovered a low-temperature feature in strain glass that is similar to the well-known boson peak anomaly in structural glasses, but cannot be explained by existing mechanisms. This anomaly is caused by the phonon softening of the non-transforming matrix surrounding martensitic domains, and it verifies a recent theoretical model without assumptions of disorder. This finding may provide fresh insights into understanding the nature of glassy states and associated vibrational properties.
