Laser machined micropatterns as corrosion protection of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic magnesium

Yahya Efe Yayoglu et al.

Summary: Magnesium and its alloys are considered promising materials for medical implants due to their biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, the degradation rate of magnesium in aqueous environments is too high for most applications. A study found that hydrophobic textured surfaces can reduce corrosion rates on magnesium, but the specific role of texture and hydrophobic treatments in corrosion rates needs further investigation.

Femtosecond laser ablation of AZ31 magnesium alloy under high repetition frequencies

Kaiheng Xiao et al.

Summary: Different micro-nano structures were fabricated by femtosecond laser ablation of the surface of an AZ31 magnesium alloy at high repetition frequencies. The combination of repetition frequencies and pulse energies determines the formation of granular, cauliflower-like, and porous structures. Complex porous structures were efficiently fabricated by double-layer scan. Ablation significantly increased the surface hardness.
