Variable-focus liquid lens based on electrically responsive fluid

Miao Xu et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates an adaptive liquid lens using a novel transparent electrically responsive fluid, DBA. The DBA liquid lens with a hemispherical piano-convex shape can change its curvature according to various input voltages. The proposed DBA liquid lens exhibits high optical transmittance, good thermal stability, and excellent imaging property.

Electrically tunable liquid crystal lens with a serpentine electrode design

Justin Stevens et al.

Summary: This article describes the design and operational principle of a new electrically tunable gradient index liquid crystal lens. The lens utilizes linear serpentine electrodes and does not require a semiconductor layer. Experimental results demonstrate that a lens with a 2 mm clear aperture has an optical power of 9.5 diopters and a root-mean-square wave-front error of 0.16 μm. The lens is tested with a miniature camera and the improvement in image quality is experimentally demonstrated.
