Bound States in the Continuum in Compact Acoustic Resonators

Summary: Finite-size solid acoustic resonators are found to support genuine bound states in the continuum (BICs) localized inside the resonator, which can be classified based on multipole theory. Breaking the symmetry of the resonator leads to quasi-BICs, reflected as high Q Fano resonances in the scattering spectra. These novel states have significant implications for pushing the performance limits of acoustic devices and serving as high-Q building blocks for acoustic sensors, antennas, and topological acoustic structures.

Elastic bound state in the continuum with perfect mode conversion

Summary: The study demonstrates the formation of a trapped mode with perfect mode conversion between flexural waves and longitudinal waves in an open elastic wave system. By achieving a quasi-bound state in the continuum, the researchers were able to approach infinite quality factor for the mode conversion. Additionally, they showed that the quality factor can be continuously tuned from quasi-BIC to BIC through the critical frequency of mode conversion, offering the possibility of achieving perfect mode conversion with an arbitrarily high quality factor.
