Shaping the stress field in cell monolayers via intercellular water flows

Yuehua Yang et al.

Summary: This study establishes a direct link between intercellular water flows and stress profile in cell monolayers, and reveals the influence of water flow field on maximum stress and traction. The findings provide a new strategy to modulate stress field and stress-related physiological processes.

Theory of mechanochemical patterning and optimal migration in cell monolayers

Daniel Boocock et al.

Summary: Collective cell migration involves spatiotemporal waves of density and ERK activation, influenced by mechanical forces and biochemical signaling. A biophysical model is developed to explain these phenomena and predict their use for robust and efficient long-ranged migration.

A contraction-reaction-diffusion model for circular pattern formation in embryogenesis

Tiankai Zhao et al.

Summary: Reaction-diffusion models are widely used to study pattern formation in developmental biology, but traditional equations cannot explain concentric ring distributions of cell types; it is suggested that circular patterns are the result of coupling mechanobiological factors with reaction-diffusion models.

Modeling mechanochemical pattern formation in elastic sheets of biological matter

Andrei Zakharov et al.

Summary: The study investigates two generic mechanochemical models in which the deformations of a thin elastic sheet are driven by and affect the concentration gradients of a chemical signal. Different patterns are formed depending on shell thickness, strength of mechanochemical coupling, and diffusivity. The numerical method based on separation of timescales is effective in simulating such systems.

Bio-chemo-mechanical theory of active shells

Sifan Yin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a bio-chemo-mechanical theoretical framework to model complex morphologies and dynamic behaviors in living thin structures. Hopf and Pitchfork bifurcations induced by chemomechanical feedback are found to be the primary mechanisms triggering pattern formation. The proposed numerical scheme can track the dynamic pattern evolution beyond the stationary state.
