A reactive transport modeling perspective on the dynamics of interface-coupled dissolution-precipitation

Hang Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of the mineral-fluid interface in interface coupled dissolution-precipitation systems. The results highlight the interplay between mineral reaction rates, flow regime, and diffusion through the coating layer in controlling the macroscopic coating behaviors. The study also emphasizes the complex dependence of precipitates' texture on solution chemistry and substrate properties, which affects the diffusion process within the precipitates.

Summary: In situ bioremediation is commonly used for groundwater contaminants, but the traditional belief that a more homogeneous medium leads to better bioremediation has been challenged. Our study investigates the impact of pore matrix heterogeneities on substrate inhibition, revealing that heterogeneities can promote degradation rates at high concentrations and increase overall efficiency.

Qingzhong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposed an advection-diffusion-mechanical deformation integral model to predict coal matrix methane permeability by combining digital rock physics with laboratory measurements. Results revealed that gas slippage and initial formation pressure dominate the coal matrix methane permeability, while using Darcy flow to describe methane flow in the coal matrix underestimates permeability by at least 40%.

Pore-Scale Study to Analyze the Impacts of Porous Media Heterogeneity on Mineral Dissolution and Acid Transport Using Darcy-Brinkmann-Stokes Method

Jiahui You et al.

Summary: The study developed a new pore-scale reactive transport model based on the OpenFOAM platform, which was validated by simulating the effects of different grain sizes and distributions on mineral dissolution rate and acid transport characteristics. Sensitivity analysis was conducted on various Damkohler numbers and Peclet numbers, and the changing volume fraction of pores was categorized into three growth patterns. The model showed promising results and can be applied to systems with complex pore structures to predict dissolution rates and porosity changes during acidizing in large-scale continuum models.

A Pore-Scale Investigation of Mineral Precipitation Driven Diffusivity Change at the Column-Scale

H. Deng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the pore-scale dynamics of precipitation in diffusion controlled systems and its impact on effective diffusivity in porous media. Different precipitation scenarios and rates were simulated in various pore structures, showing that local precipitation reduces porosity until diffusive transport cessation. A revised relationship between porosity and effective diffusivity with a critical porosity and critical effective diffusivity is proposed, with coefficients and exponents varying based on initial pore structure and precipitation kinetics. Homogeneous nucleation results in larger critical porosity and sharper decrease in diffusivity compared to surface growth scenario. The revised relationship is implemented at continuum scale to examine column scale diffusivity change and reactions.

A model for discrete fracture-clay rock interaction incorporating electrostatic effects on transport

Carl I. Steefel et al.

Summary: The model presented in this study takes into account the electrostatic effects on transport in a fracture-clay matrix system, considering the development of a diffusion potential and the formation of a diffuse layer bordering clay particles. The model is based on a dual continuum formulation, providing a more flexible framework than traditional mean electrostatic potential models. Simulation results show that anions are not significantly retarded within the fracture flow system, while the migration of cations is more strongly attenuated, particularly due to the accumulation of divalent cations in the diffuse layer within the clay-rich matrix.
