The wide range of possible aviation demand futures after the COVID-19 pandemic

Sebastian Franz et al.

Summary: Aviation, particularly long-range aviation, is identified as a crucial sector that heavily relies on liquid fuels. The sector, which was previously one of the fastest-growing emitters of fossil CO2 emissions, experienced reduced demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating uncertainty regarding future demand outlooks. While previous studies have examined the variation in aviation demands due to factors such as demographics, income levels, and pricing policies, there is a lack of exploration into more sustainable demand futures. This study utilizes an open-source model to analyze country-level aviation demand scenarios based on qualitative narratives and socioeconomic data. The results indicate that without interventions to change past demand growth patterns, the aviation sector may reach unsustainable levels. Therefore, policies aimed at reducing flying frequency play a significant role in long-term decarbonization strategies.

Diversity of options to eliminate fossil fuels and reach carbon neutrality across the entire European energy system

Bryn Pickering et al.

Summary: This study develops a high-resolution model to simulate the entire European energy system and generates 441 technically feasible system designs. The results show that a wide range of systems based on renewable energy are feasible without the need to import energy from outside Europe. The model solutions also reveal flexibility in the choice and geographical distribution of new infrastructure.

Full energy sector transition towards 100% renewable energy supply: Integrating power, heat, transport and industry sectors including desalination

Dmitrii Bogdanov et al.

Summary: The transition towards long-term sustainable energy systems by 2050 requires the elimination of greenhouse gas emissions in all energy sectors and close coupling of these sectors for maximum efficiency. The research showcases a tool for modeling this complex energy system transition, with results from Kazakhstan showing that a 100% renewable energy system by 2050 is possible despite challenging conditions. The integration of sectors enables additional flexibility and efficiency, with the potential to significantly reduce CO2eq emissions by 2050.

Alternative carbon price trajectories can avoid excessive carbon removal

Jessica Strefler et al.

Summary: Most climate change mitigation scenarios overestimate the need for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) due to assumptions of exponentially increasing carbon prices. However, controlling global warming well below 2 degrees C may be more achievable with lower long-term economic effort and CDR deployment if high carbon prices are set initially to ensure target compliance, and then increase at a slower rate after carbon neutrality is reached.

Carbon footprint impacts of banning cars with internal combustion engines

Johannes Morfeldt et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of banning sales of passenger cars with internal combustion engines on the carbon footprints of passenger car travel in Sweden. The ban resulted in significantly decreased carbon footprints primarily due to reduced tailpipe CO2 emissions, but the full effect was delayed. Increasing the pace of electrification is beneficial for reducing carbon footprints, and a ban in 2030 may not be sufficient to achieve national policy targets.

Commercial afforestation can deliver effective climate change mitigation under multiple decarbonisation pathways

Eilidh J. Forster et al.

Summary: The study shows that commercial conifer forests can achieve up to 269% more greenhouse gas mitigation than semi-natural forests over 100 years. The growth rate of the forests is the most important factor affecting greenhouse gas mitigation, and typically, harvesting stands have higher mitigation effects compared to unharvested stands.

Impact of carbon dioxide removal technologies on deep decarbonization of the electric power sector

John E. T. Bistline et al.

Summary: This study examines the impacts of carbon removal technologies on electric sector investments, costs, and emissions, finding that adding these technologies can lower the costs of deep decarbonization and reduce dependence on other technologies. Bioenergy with carbon capture is selected for net-zero electric sector emissions targets, while direct air capture deployment increases as biomass supply costs rise. Carbon dioxide removal technologies can influence power sector planning and operations.
