The effects of visual landscape and traffic type on soundscape perception in high-rise residential estates of an urban city

Johann Kay Ann Tan et al.

Summary: In densely populated urban areas, residents are increasingly exposed to noise pollution from traffic, construction, and other undesirable human activities, which may have adverse effects on their well-being. Using Singapore as a case study, this research investigates the soundscapes in such urban spaces and examines the impact of traffic and landscape features on soundscape perception. A predictive model based on acoustics, psychoacoustics, and audio features is developed. The findings show that traffic (40%) and natural sounds (36%) dominate the soundscapes in the selected urban areas. The study also identifies the significant effects of traffic conditions and landscape features on soundscape perception, highlighting the importance of considering the type of traffic infrastructure in residential planning.

A qualitative and quantitative synthesis of the impacts of COVID-19 on soundscapes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yoshimi Hasegawa et al.

Summary: This review study examines the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on soundscapes and quantifies the unprecedented changes in acoustic environments. The study finds substantial adverse consequences of pandemic soundscapes on human health and well-being, while also highlighting the potential beneficial aspects. The results also indicate that the severity of COVID-19 confinement policies, urban morphology, and main noise sources are factors that influence the observed noise-level reduction.

Psychological well-being and demographic factors can mediate soundscape pleasantness and eventfulness: A large sample study

Mercede Erfanian et al.

Summary: Soundscape studies analyze the impact of internal factors such as psychological well-being, age, gender, occupation status, and education levels on the perception of Pleasantness and Eventfulness in sound environments. While internal factors account for a small percentage of variance, the location context plays a significant role in shaping individuals' experiences of soundscapes.

Indoor soundscapes at home during the COVID-19 lockdown in London - Part I: Associations between the perception of the acoustic environment, occupants activity and well-being

Simone Torresin et al.

Summary: Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the home environment has become the main place for daily activities. The study found that people had different perceptions of the indoor acoustic environment while working from home and relaxing, and that psychological well-being was closely related to comfortable soundscapes.

Soundscape in Times of Change: Case Study of a City Neighbourhood During the COVID-19 Lockdown

Sara Lenzi et al.

Summary: This article presents a case study of human perception of environmental sounds in an urban neighborhood in the Basque Country during the COVID-19 lockdown. The study reveals changes in people's perception of sound, with an increase in the presence of human voices and walking sounds, a decrease in technological sounds, and a noticeable increase in eventfulness and loudness.
