GAMMA: a tool for the rapid identification, classification and annotation of translated gene matches from sequencing data

Richard A. Stanton et al.

Summary: GAMMA is an open-source tool for Gene Allele Mutation Microbial Assessment that accurately identifies antimicrobial resistance genes and can be used with any gene database. Its speed and flexibility make it ideal for rapidly finding and annotating gene matches of interest in microbial sequencing data.

Extensively Drug-Resistant Carbapenemase-Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Medical Tourism from the United States to Mexico, 2018-2019

Ian Kracalik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the source of CRPA among US medical tourists who underwent bariatric surgery in Mexico and found that the isolates related to the surgeon in Mexico were distinct from isolates linked to other surgeons. US patients and providers should be aware of the risk of infection with uncommon highly drug-resistant pathogens after medical tourism.

National surveillance pilot study unveils a multicenter, clonal outbreak of VIM-2-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa ST111 in the Netherlands between 2015 and 2017

Jannette Pirzadian et al.

Summary: In the Netherlands, a national surveillance pilot study in 2016 revealed a nationwide, inter-institutional, clonal outbreak of VIM-2-producing P. aeruginosa lasting at least three years. This highlights the importance of structured, national surveillance programs to monitor the spread of carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa and control future outbreaks.

Rapid evolution and host immunity drive the rise and fall of carbapenem resistance during an acute Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection

Rachel Wheatley et al.

Summary: This study reveals how host immunity and natural selection interact to drive the rapid changes in antibiotic resistance during infection. The development and decrease of resistant strains post-treatment result in dynamic changes in antibiotic resistance during the infection process.

Variability of Beta-Lactam Broth Microdilution for Pseudomonas aeruginosa

A. A. Bhalodi et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing for Pseudomonas aeruginosa is crucial for determining appropriate treatment options, but the reproducibility of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) is influenced by various factors such as inoculum and operators. Testing of anti-pseudomonal beta-lactams against a collection of P. aeruginosa isolates showed that overall essential agreement was ≥90%, but absolute agreement could be as low as 70% in some cases. The variability in MICs has wide-ranging implications for microbiology, including the development of new compounds, dose optimization, and PK/PD targets for individual patients.

Reversing Antibiotic Resistance Caused by Mobile Resistance Genes of High Fitness Cost

Jinyong Wu et al.

Summary: This study suggests that highly mobile antibiotic resistance genes with high fitness costs may exhibit poor stability. Therefore, strict control of antibiotic use can at least reverse severe antibiotic resistance caused by these genes. This research provides hope for potentially curbing the spread of antibiotic resistance.
