Financial Toxicity Following Surgical Treatment for Breast Cancer: A Cross-sectional Pilot Study

Anaeze C. Offodile et al.

Summary: Financial toxicity in breast cancer patients undergoing surgical treatment is associated with baseline demographic, disease, and treatment characteristics. Increasing annual income, using supplemental insurance, and having a higher credit score were found to be associated with lower financial distress. Conversely, factors such as work reduction, increased out-of-pocket spending, advanced tumor stage, and employment status at diagnosis were associated with increased financial distress.

Summary: This study examined the association between neighborhood disadvantage using the ADI and DCI with patient insurance status on the risk of 30-day readmissions after colorectal surgery. The results showed that ADI was positively associated with increased readmission risk, suggesting its potential use in identifying high-risk patients and improving care pathways.

Racial disparities exist in surgical outcomes for patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Isabel C. Dos Santos Marques et al.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study using the ACS-NSQIP database revealed racial disparities in surgical outcomes for Black, Hispanic, and Asian patients with IBD compared to White patients. Black patients had increased odds of complications, Hispanic patients had higher odds of readmission, and Asian patients had longer hospital stays. Future research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind these disparities.

County-level Social Vulnerability is Associated With Worse Surgical Outcomes Especially Among Minority Patients

Adrian Diaz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the association between patient county-level vulnerability and postoperative outcomes. Patients living in vulnerable communities generally had worse postoperative outcomes, with the impact being most pronounced among Black/minority patients rather than White individuals. Efforts to ensure equitable surgical outcomes should focus on both patient-level and community-specific factors.

Understanding the Relationship between Breast Reconstruction Subtype and Risk of Financial Toxicity: A Single-Institution Pilot Study

Chad M. Bailey et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different types of breast reconstruction on financial toxicity in breast cancer patients. The results showed that different breast reconstruction subtypes did not have a significant difference in the risk of financial toxicity, while higher income and having supplemental insurance were found to be protective factors. Receipt of radiation therapy was positively associated with financial toxicity.
