Treatment and Outcome in Children With Tuberculous Meningitis: A Multicenter Pediatric Tuberculosis Network European Trials Group Study

Stephanie Thee et al.

Summary: This European multicenter study provides data on the management and outcome of tuberculosis (TB) meningitis in children, highlighting that both morbidity and mortality remain high even in high-resource settings. Several key factors associated with unfavorable outcome were identified.

The Sensitivity of Diagnostic Criteria of Marais S, et al. in Confirmed Childhood Tuberculous Meningitis

Mao-Shui Wang et al.

Summary: A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of the diagnostic criteria for childhood tuberculous meningitis (TBM) published by Marais et al. in 2010. The study found that the criteria effectively identified childhood TBM, but further revisions are needed to improve sensitivity and practicality.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Bacillary Load by Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra Polymerase Chain Reaction Cycle Threshold Value Predicts 2-Week Mortality in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Associated Tuberculous Meningitis

Emily M. Martyn et al.

Summary: High CSF TB bacillary load, as measured by Xpert Ultra Ct tertile, is significantly associated with nearly 2-fold higher 2-week mortality in HIV-associated TBM, and may be a better predictor than the reported Xpert Ultra semi-quantitative category. Xpert Ultra Ct values could potentially identify TBM patients at higher risk of death who could benefit from enhanced supportive care.

Risk factors for poor outcome in childhood tuberculous meningitis

Mao-Shui Wang et al.

Summary: Childhood tuberculous meningitis (TBM) still remains a serious disease with high mortality rates in China. Risk factors such as high cerebrospinal fluid protein levels and coma were identified to be associated with poor outcomes of childhood TBM. More attention should be given to suspected patients with these characteristics to ensure they receive optimal treatment.
