To Expand the Evidence Base About Harms from Tests and Treatments

Deborah Korenstein et al.

Summary: Rigorous evidence on the harms experienced by patients during testing and treatment is lacking. The authors propose seven domains of harms relevant to patients and encourage researchers to evaluate harms in diverse sub-populations for better clinical decision-making. Regulators, funders, and editors may require assessment or reporting of harms in each domain.

Screening for Lung Cancer: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement

Alex H. Krist et al.

Summary: Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and leading cause of cancer death in the US, with smoking and increasing age being the primary risk factors. Annual screening with low-dose computed tomography is recommended for adults aged 50 to 80 years with a 20 pack-year smoking history.

Screening for Lung Cancer With Low-Dose Computed Tomography Updated Evidence Report and Systematic Review for the US Preventive Services Task Force

Daniel E. Jonas et al.

Summary: Screening high-risk individuals with LDCT can decrease lung cancer mortality but may also result in false positives, overdiagnosis, incidental findings, distress, and rarely radiation-induced cancers. More research is needed to optimize nodule evaluation protocols to minimize harms associated with screening.

Screening for Colorectal Cancer: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement

Karina W. Davidson et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related deaths, with high incidence in adults aged 65 to 74. Screening is recommended for adults aged 50 to 75 with substantial net benefit, for those aged 45 to 49 with moderate net benefit, and selective screening is advised for adults aged 76 to 85.
