Removal of polystyrene nanoplastics from aqueous solutions using a novel magnetic material: Adsorbability, mechanism, and reusability

Hanghang Zhao et al.

Summary: Nano/microplastics have become a major concern in aquatic systems, with no effective method currently available to remove them from sewage. This study developed a new magnetic material (NMA) using modified fly ash to successfully remove polystyrene nanoplastics from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process involves electrostatic attraction, complexation, and 7C-7C interactions, and competitive ions can affect the removal efficiency of the nanoplastics. The NMA adsorbents showed excellent reusability for nanoplastics, providing a potential solution to control NP/MP contamination.

Spherical Nucleic Acid Mediated Functionalization of Polydopamine-Coated Nanoparticles for Selective DNA Extraction and Detection

Mohamad Zandieh et al.

Summary: In this study, a core-shell magnetic structure coated with polydopamine was designed to achieve highly selective DNA extraction by functionalizing with spherical nucleic acids. The findings suggest that SNA allows for a higher probe density on the NPs compared to SH-DNA, leading to faster and more effective DNA extraction. This surface modification strategy using PDA@SNA conjugates provides a general approach for sequence-specific DNA extraction.
