Design of Multifunctional Nanopore Using Polyampholyte Brush with Composition Gradient

Shiyi Qin et al.

Summary: Researchers designed an artificial nanopore coated with an asymmetric polyampholyte brush to study asymmetric mass transport. They developed a nonequilibrium steady-state molecular theory and presented a comprehensive theoretical description of the stimuli-responsive structural behaviors and transport properties inside the nanopore with all molecular details considered. The model demonstrated the possibility of achieving asymmetric charge patterns and functional structures in a pH-responsive manner, leading to the nanopore acting as an ionic rectifier with a rectification factor above 1000 at optimized pH and salt concentration.

Enhancing the Sensitivity of Photoelectrochemical DNA Biosensing Using Plasmonic DNA Barcodes and Differential Signal Readout

Amanda Victorious et al.

Summary: The study developed a new PEC biosensing strategy that increases the detection sensitivity and specificity of DNA biosensors in biological samples by combining signals from two related binding events using differential signal generation. This new strategy demonstrated a detection limit of 3 fM, showing up to a 15- and three-fold increase in limit of detection and sensitivity, respectively, compared to previous PEC assays with a single binding event.

Nanoscale Amperometry Reveals that Only a Fraction of Vesicular Serotonin Content is Released During Exocytosis from Beta Cells

Amir Hatamie et al.

Summary: The research shows that vesicular release in pancreatic beta cells is not all-or-none, but rather partial release of insulin and serotonin. Utilizing nanoscale amperometric chemical methods, the study quantified the amount of serotonin stored and released during each exocytosis event, revealing that beta cells only release one-third of their granule content. This has implications for understanding type-2 diabetes.

A Dinuclear Osmium(II) Complex Near-Infrared Nanoscopy Probe for Nuclear DNA

Fabian Droge et al.

Summary: By combining resonance Raman and time-resolved absorption spectroscopy, as well as computational studies, the excited state dynamics of the new complex were analyzed. It was found that the near-infrared (NIR) emission (λmax = 780 nm) of the complex is attributed to a low-lying Os -> TAP based (MCLT)-M-3 state, despite the existence of several closely lying excited states. The complex, while highly photostable and live-cell permeant, is not cytotoxic or photocytotoxic, making it an ideal probe for optical microscopy.

Towards explicit regulating-ion-transport: nanochannels with only function-elements at outer-surface

Qun Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that function elements at the outer surface can independently regulate ion transport in nanochannel systems without the presence of inner wall function elements. Nanochannel systems with explicit properties of only outer surface function elements have advantages in promoting power density, increasing ionic selectivity, and accommodating large size probes or targets.

A Minimal Load-and-Lock RuII Luminescent DNA Probe

Matthew D. Newton et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the dinuclear ruthenium(II) complex can thread and lock into force-extended DNA in a two-step mechanism, with one stereoisomer showing the highest binding affinity reported. Interestingly, the complex behaves differently on torsionally constrained DNA and negatively supercoiled DNA, making it a potential long-lived luminescent label for biological applications.
