Long-Range Spatial Distribution of Single Aluminum Sites in Zeolites

Enrico Salvadori et al.

Summary: In this study, we derived the spatial distribution of single aluminum sites within the ZSM-5 zeolite framework in the nanometer range using the dipolar interaction between paramagnetic metal ions. Our findings were validated using a Monte Carlo approach on a pristine ZSM-5 sample, and the sensitivity of the method allowed us to monitor aluminum redistribution induced by chemical stress in the framework.

Excited State Dynamics in Dual-Defects Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride

Shriya Gumber et al.

Summary: Significant efforts have been made to enhance the efficacy of metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) through defect engineering. This study focuses on a novel concept of multidefect-modified g-C3N4, with two or more defects, which has attracted attention due to its enhanced photocatalytic properties. The study compares the excited state dynamics in g-C3N4 with nitrogen defects and dual defects, and demonstrates that the nonradiative recombination of charge carriers in these systems follows the Shockley-Read-Hall mechanism. The results show that the dual-defect modified systems exhibit superior properties compared to pristine g-C3N4, as the defects facilitate rapid charge separation and extend the spectrum of absorbed light. The study also reveals that the system doped with O shows better performance, attributed to enhanced carrier lifetime and higher oxidation potential caused by a downshifted valence band. This study provides valuable guidance for the rational design of stable and efficient photocatalytic materials.

Radical defects modulate the photocatalytic response in 2D-graphitic carbon nitride

Edoardo Raciti et al.

Summary: By using density functional theory calculations and experimental EPR measurements, the study reveals that structural defects on the gCN surface can create distinctive radical defect states that are essential for photo-activity in certain amorphous and reduced gCN structures. These defect types act as binding sites for specific radical precursors, facilitating photo-induced charge transfer and triggering specific photo-chemical processes for desired reactions.

In-Plane Structural Fluctuations in Differently Condensed Graphitic Carbon Nitrides

Diane M. Haiber et al.

Summary: Graphitic carbon nitrides are important materials for energy conversion processes, but structural disorder hinders the prediction of structure-property relationships. Low-fluence-rate transmission electron microscopy and analysis of local Patterson functions reveal fluctuations in the in-plane structures and their relationship to polymer chain lengths. Shorter chains are associated with higher amine content, and investigation of 3D stacking sequence shows turbostratic stacking disorder. These insights help in constructing accurate structure models and predicting catalytic properties of g-CNxHy.

Tailored amorphization of graphitic carbon nitride triggers superior photocatalytic C-C coupling towards the synthesis of perfluoroalkyl derivatives

Francesco Longobardo et al.

Summary: In this study, a post-synthetic modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) through amorphization treatment resulted in an increase in photocatalytic activity towards the synthesis of valuable perfluoroalkyl derivatives. The super-amorphous CN (SACN) showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity due to its lower crystallinity and reduced bandgap, making it a potential benchmark structure for heterogeneous organic photocatalysis with good versatility and tolerance towards functional group variations of reagents.
