Direct Participation of Solvent Molecules in the Formation of Supramolecular Polymers

Goutam Ghosh et al.

Summary: This article reports the supramolecular polymerization behavior of two bis-amide functionalized naphthalene-diimide building blocks in different solvents. The results show that the intrinsic packing parameters of the building blocks and the peripheral steric crowding play a dominant role in the internal order and H-bonding pattern of the aggregates. Additionally, the choice of solvent also significantly affects gel formation and properties. Molecular dynamics simulations provide further insights into the thermodynamics of self-assembly. The study supports the direct participation of solvent molecules in supramolecular polymerization and the existence of a shape-matching effect.

Complete Dynamic Phase Diagram of a Supramolecular Polymer

Nikolaos A. Burger et al.

Summary: This study revisits the equilibrium phase diagram of the model supramolecular polymer EHUT in nonpolar solvents and uncovers a richer behavior with four distinct regimes. By combining rheology and microrheology, the complete dynamic phase diagram of EHUT in dodecane is established, revealing three dynamic states of the tube structure at different concentrations. The findings provide insights into investigating other supramolecular polymers with tunable rheology and understanding one-dimensional self-assembled structures.

Dilution-induced gel-sol-gel-sol transitions by competitive supramolecular pathways in water

Lu Su et al.

Summary: Synthetic multicomponent supramolecular systems exhibit fascinating properties through competitive interactions. This study presents the integration of two reversible phase transitions based on dilution-induced assembly process. Small-sized aggregates were formed by the co-assembly of water-soluble benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide and a surfactant, which were transformed into supramolecular polymer networks by dilution. Additionally, the introduction of orthogonal interaction allowed for fully reversible hydrogel-solution-hydrogel-solution transitions.

Polymorphism and Optoelectronic Properties in Crystalline Supramolecular Polymers

Niklas Grabicki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation of supramolecular polymers in water by carboxylated naphtho-p-quinodimethane amphiphiles. It was found that the polymorphism of crystalline assemblies, including ribbons, helically rolled ribbons, and twisted filaments, was controlled by the degree of protonation of the carboxylic head groups. Different protonation levels led to varying morphologies and visible absorption shifts in the resulting assemblies, making them potential candidates for solar energy materials and photocatalytic systems.

Influence of the Z/E Isomerism on the Pathway Complexity of a Squaramide-Based Macrocycle

Francisca Orvay et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of Z/E isomerism of squaramide units to produce various self-assembled isoforms and complex supramolecular polymerization pathways in specific solvent systems for the first time. By utilizing a new bissquaramidic macrocycle, two distinct thermodynamic aggregates are formed, allowing for a kinetic-to-thermodynamic transformation and providing new insights for potential supramolecular polymorphic materials design using squaramide units.

Effect of Azobenzene Regioisomerism on Intrinsically Curved Supramolecular Polymers

Kenta Tamaki et al.

Summary: The supramolecular polymerization of two regioisomeric naphthalene-azobenzene dyads bearing barbituric acid and tri(dodecyloxy)phenyl units in nonpolar solvent was studied, revealing considerable differences in their topologies. One isomer formed randomly coiled supramolecular polymers with intrinsic curvature, while the other formed linearly extended supramolecular polymers. Only the former showed a large topological change upon photo-irradiation due to different geometrical changes accompanied with photoisomerization of the azobenzene unit. These differences were attributed to the distinct geometries of supermacrocyclic hydrogen-bonded intermediates (rosettes).

Summary: In this study, we reported the liquid-crystalline and luminescent properties of a series of N-annulated perylenes. It was found that the liquid-crystalline properties of these compounds depend on the number and position of hydrogen bonding units and amide linkers in the molecule. Compounds with no hydrogen bonding units in the inner part of the molecule exhibit luminescence vapochromism when exposed to organic solvent vapors.

Stereoselective Primary and Secondary Nucleation Events in Multicomponent Seeded Supramolecular Polymerization

Souvik Sarkar et al.

Summary: Bioinspired, kinetically controlled seeded growth has been shown to provide length, dispersity, and sequence control on the primary structure of dynamic supramolecular polymers. However, command over the molecular organization at all hierarchical levels for the modulation of higher order structures of supramolecular polymers remains challenging. Surface-catalyzed secondary nucleation process offers exciting possibilities for topology control in synthetic macromolecular systems, but mechanistic insights into the molecular determinants and driving forces for the secondary nucleation event in synthetic systems are lacking. The study attempts to fill this gap by demonstrating molecular chirality control on primary and secondary nucleation events in seed-induced supramolecular polymerization, with kinetic experiments providing insights into the nucleation processes.
