Efficacy and Safety of Ornithine Phenylacetate for Treating Overt Hepatic Encephalopathy in a Randomized Trial

Robert S. Rahimi et al.

Summary: In this study, no significant difference in time to clinical improvement was found between patients with cirrhosis and HE treated with the ammonia scavenger OP compared to placebo. However, OP appeared to be safe and further testing is recommended for its use in treating hyperammonemia in hospitalized patients with acute or overt HE.

Clinical, neuropsychological and neurophysiological indices and predictors of hepatic encephalopathy (HE)

Chiara Formentin et al.

Summary: The study found that in patients without a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy, neuropsychological and neurophysiological tests can predict the occurrence of hepatic encephalopathy, while in patients with a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy, the severity of liver dysfunction plays a larger role in the development of hepatic encephalopathy.

Summary: The study describes the development of a microplate-based assay for accurate and precise ammonia quantification in biological fluids. The assay has a large quantification range, high selectivity, and can accurately detect ammonia in spiked human plasma samples, with appropriate solutions for bilirubin interference.
