Infectivity of Symptomatic Malaria Patients to Anopheles farauti Colony Mosquitoes in Papua New Guinea

Summary: The transmission of Plasmodium from humans to mosquitoes is not well studied, but direct membrane feeding assays can provide insight. Research in Papua New Guinea found that symptomatic malaria patients had infectivity to Anopheles farauti mosquitoes, with 20.9% of cases resulting in mosquito infections. Analysis showed that P. vivax infection rates were higher than P. falciparum, with 58% of P. vivax gametocytaemic infections infecting An. farauti.

Mechanisms and targets of Fcγ-receptor mediated immunity to malaria sporozoites

Antibodies play critical roles in adaptive immune responses to infectious agents, with Fc gamma-receptors being essential for their activity against Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites.

Anopheles ecology, genetics and malaria transmission in northern Cambodia

Evaluating vaccine candidates should move beyond individual assays or measuring IgG magnitude alone, and instead incorporate a wider range of assays measuring functional antibody responses. Optimization of the feeding rate of Anopheles farauti s.s. colony mosquitoes in direct membrane feeding assays

Optimal conditions involved offering 50 female mosquitoes in a cup, using overnight starved mosquitoes, providing 350-500 μL of blood via a Baudruche membrane, for at least 10-20 minutes.

Investigating differences in village-level heterogeneity of malaria infection and household risk factors in Papua New Guinea

Surveillance of molecular markers of Plasmodium falciparum artemisinin resistance (kelch13 mutations) in Papua New Guinea between 2016 and 2018

Summary: Resistance to artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) by Plasmodium falciparum poses a global threat to malaria control efforts. Mutations in the P. falciparum kelch13 gene (Pfk13) have emerged along the Thai-Cambodian border since 2008, with evidence of widespread mutations in South-East Asia and other endemic regions. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), low prevalence of Pfk13 mutations was observed between 2016 and 2018, with the C580Y mutation mainly found in Wewak and a single isolate in Lae, highlighting the potential risk of drug-resistant parasites entering the country. Continued surveillance is necessary to inform malaria control strategies in PNG.
