Whole-body MRI in oncology: can a single anatomic T2 Dixon sequence replace the combination of T1 and STIR sequences to detect skeletal metastasis and myeloma?

Ophelye Chiabai et al.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of a single T2 Dixon sequence to the combination of T1+STIR sequences for detecting tumoral bone marrow lesions in whole-body MRI. The results showed that the T2 Dixon sequence with fat+water reconstructions had similar reproducibility and diagnostic accuracy as the recommended combination of T1+STIR sequences, and it can save significant time.

Early diagnosis and response assessment in chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis: changes in lesion volume and signal intensity assessed by whole-body MRI

Angelina Kieninger et al.

Summary: Whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) can aid in the early diagnosis of chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) and predict clinical response. There was no significant difference in the number and volume of lesions between clinical responders and non-responders, but responders showed a greater reduction in lesion volume and lower T2 signal intensity ratios.

Guisen Lin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) for assessing the therapeutic response of hematological malignancies. The results showed that WB-MRI has high sensitivity and specificity in the assessment of treatment response in hematological malignancies. The use of whole-body diffusion-weighted imaging (WB-DWI) was associated with increased sensitivity. WB-MRI showed similar diagnostic performance to PET/CT.

A review on the added value of whole-body MRI in metastatic lobular breast cancer

Basrull N. Bhaludin et al.

Summary: Invasive lobular breast carcinomas (ILC) are difficult to diagnose due to their infiltrative growth pattern. The unusual metastasis pattern of ILC, including spread to serosal surfaces and higher leptomeningeal spread, presents challenges in disease assessment. Whole-body MRI (WBMRI) is a functional imaging technique that can detect additional disease sites in metastatic breast cancer (MBC). WBMRI is particularly valuable for non-FDG-avid ILC cases, as it provides information on cellular density differences between malignant and benign tissues.

Subclinical involvement of the trunk muscles in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies

Nozomu Matsuda et al.

Summary: This study used whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) to examine inflammatory changes in skeletal muscles, including trunk muscles, in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). The results showed that asymptomatic and routinely unexamined muscles often have inflammatory changes, and trunk muscles are frequently involved in certain specific diseases. In addition, the STIR sum score is positively correlated with serum peak CK level and could be a biomarker for overall muscle inflammation.

Miyuki Takasu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the utility of chemical shift imaging (CSI) in differentiating myelomatous infiltration from hematopoietic bone marrow and quantitatively assessing disease severity. Results showed that CSI was ineffective in distinguishing between the two types of bone marrow and may indicate higher tumor burden in myeloma patients with relatively high bone marrow cellularity, but not reflect disease severity in bone marrow with relatively low cellularity.

Summary: This study assessed the diagnostic value of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) in children with fever without a focus, finding that WB-MRI provides helpful information in approximately 2/3 of cases and is useful in excluding the need for further investigation in most cases. It was less likely to be helpful in immunosuppressed children and cases of prolonged fever (>3 weeks).

Summary: The study found that whole-body diffusion-weighted MRI is highly accurate for diagnosis, staging and follow-up of patients with gastric cancer. CT had limitations in detecting certain aspects of the disease, while WB-DWI/MRI showed superior performance in detecting peritoneal lesions and metastases. In conclusion, WB-DWI/MRI is a valuable addition to CT for preoperative staging in gastric cancer patients.
