Regular Use of Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Causes Thinning of the Superficial Lining and Apical Distribution of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Target Cells in the Human Ectocervix

Gabriella Edfeldt et al.

Summary: This study found that women using the hormonal contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) have a thinner ectocervical epithelial layer and a higher proportion of CD4(+)CCR5(+) cells with a more superficial location. The localization corresponds to an area with a nonintact E-cadherin net structure. CD4(+)Langerin(+) cells in the DMPA group are also more superficially located, although in smaller numbers compared to the control group.

Differential Elevation of Inflammation and CD4+ T Cell Activation in Kenyan Female Sex Workers and Non-Sex Workers Using Depot-Medroxyprogesterone Acetate

Kenneth Omollo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of DMPA on the immune system of sex workers and non-sex workers, revealing that DMPA increased inflammation and activation markers on potential HIV target cells in non-sex workers. The findings suggest that DMPA is a strong immune modulator and may increase susceptibility to HIV by increasing inflammation and HIV target cells in the blood and genital tract.

Progesterone-induced blocking factor (PIBF) influences the expression of membrane progesterone receptors (mPRs) on peripheral CD4+ T lymphocyte cells in normal fertile females

Mitra Rafiee et al.

Summary: The study characterizes the effects of PIBF on mPR expression on peripheral CD4(+) T cells of healthy fertile women. Decrease in PIBF concentration during abnormal pregnancy may modulate mPR expression and the regulatory performance of P4 on T cells. Future research on this issue may provide new insights into the etiology of abortion.

Summary: This study discusses the impact of different forms of hormonal contraception and progestins on side effects, reproductive cancers, and susceptibility to infectious diseases. The research highlights the lack of study on progestins used in hormonal contraception and emphasizes the need for greater understanding of these topics.

Proinflammatory oscillations over the menstrual cycle drives bystander CD4 T cell recruitment and SHIV susceptibility from vaginal challenge

Alison Swaims-Kohlmeier et al.

Summary: The menstrual cycle influences HIV susceptibility by driving periodic shifts in immune landscape and recruitment of CCR5+ CD4 T cells, which are bystander cells for HIV infection. The study found that macaques and healthy women exhibit similar type-1 inflammatory T cell responses over the menstrual cycle, impacting HIV vulnerability.
