Effects of pulmonary hypertension on microcirculatory hemodynamics in rat skeletal muscle

Kiana M. Schulze et al.

Summary: The impaired skeletal muscle oxygen transport in patients with pulmonary hypertension may be related to microcirculatory hemodynamic impairments, leading to compromised oxygen delivery between blood and muscle cells.

The anaerobic threshold: 50+years of controversy

David C. Poole et al.

Summary: The anaerobic threshold (AT) is a controversial concept in exercise physiology and medicine, originally thought to be caused by muscle anoxia but now understood to be a response to increased glycolytic flux. Lactate is now appreciated as an important energy source and signaling molecule, with non-invasive estimation of LT using the gas exchange threshold remaining important in exercise training and in the clinic.

Exercise intolerance in pulmonary arterial hypertension: insight into central and peripheral pathophysiological mechanisms

Simon Malenfant et al.

Summary: Exercise intolerance in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is primarily caused by both central cardiopulmonary impairments and peripheral abnormalities, with recent focus on skeletal muscle morphology, convective oxygen transport, capillarity, and metabolism. While cardiopulmonary rehabilitation has shown efficacy in improving peripheral components, further studies are needed to identify targeted interventions for enhancing exercise tolerance and quality of life in PAH patients.
