Challenges in Obtaining Valid Causal Effect Estimates With Machine Learning Algorithms

Ashley Naimi et al.

Summary: Unlike parametric regression, machine learning methods do not require precise knowledge of the data-generating mechanisms. However, machine learning algorithms can perform worse than parametric regression. In the investigated scenarios, ML-based singly robust estimators were less biased in simple confounding scenario but as biased as misspecified parametric models in complex confounding scenario. Doubly robust estimators were less biased, but coverage was below nominal. The use of sample splitting, inclusion of confounder interactions, reliance on richly specified ML algorithm, and use of doubly robust estimators yielded negligible bias and nominal coverage.

Parametric g-formula implementations for causal survival analyses

Lan Wen et al.

Summary: The study compared the efficiency of g-formula estimators through simulation studies and found similar efficiency under specific conditions, which can be applied to estimate survival curves. A new version of the iterative conditional expectation estimator was proposed in the study, with its procedures described and applied to HIV-CAUSAL Collaboration data.

AIPW: An R Package for Augmented Inverse Probability-Weighted Estimation of Average Causal Effects

Yongqi Zhong et al.

Summary: The AIPW package is able to implement AIPW estimation method, including cross-fitting and flexible covariate adjustment. Through simulated RCT and simulation studies, we found that the performance of the AIPW package is comparable to other doubly robust estimation methods, and cross-fitting can significantly reduce bias and improve confidence interval coverage.
