Computational study of flow incidence effects on the aeroacoustics of low blade-tip Mach number propellers

Gianluca Romani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aerodynamics of a propeller operating at low blade-tip Mach numbers under the influence of flow incidence effects. The presence of angular inflow leads to the radiation of tonal loading noise along the propeller axis and an increase/reduction of sound pressure level in specific regions. Unlike propellers operating at high blade-tip Mach numbers, the change in noise directivity is primarily governed by periodic unsteady loadings.

Aeroacoustic Investigation of a Propeller Operating at Low Reynolds Numbers

Edoardo Grande et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation of a propeller operating at low Reynolds numbers and provides insights into the role of aerodynamic flow features on both propeller performances and noise generation. The results reveal a complex flowfield with the appearance of a laminar separation bubble at the suction side of the blade, and the influence of the advance ratio and the separation bubble on the noise spectra.

Validation and insight of a full-scale S-76 helicopter rotor using the Lattice-Boltzmann Method

W. C. P. van der Velden et al.

Summary: This study applies a Lattice-Boltzmann based solver to perform scale-resolving unsteady flow simulations on a full-scale helicopter main rotor in forward flight for the first time. The validation is conducted by comparing the simulation results with reference wind tunnel data, providing insights into aerodynamic and acoustic quantities for different rotor advance ratios. Additionally, digital helicopter noise certification is achieved by calculating the ground noise map for a helicopter in landing condition.

Definition of a benchmark for low Reynolds number propeller aeroacoustics

Damiano Casalino et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical results of a low Reynolds number propeller are presented as a preliminary step towards defining a benchmark configuration for low Reynolds number propeller aeroacoustics. The study identifies the experimental and numerical challenges of the benchmark and the relevance of fundamental research questions related to transition and other low Reynolds number effects.
