A pore-resolved interface tracking algorithm for simulating multiphase flow in structured media

Zhongzheng Wang et al.

Summary: This article presents an interface tracking algorithm for simulating multiphase flow in porous media. The algorithm accurately captures the invasion mechanisms at the pore scale and reproduces the macroscopic invasion morphology. Through a series of simulations, the fluid displacement processes are studied in depth, providing an efficient tool to explore the effects of wettability, geometry, and topology on multiphase flow.

Numerical investigation of inertial, viscous, and capillary effects on the drainage process in porous media

Yuto Takeuchi et al.

Summary: This study numerically simulates the drainage process in porous media and investigates the inertial effects on saturation, interfacial lengths, and capillary pressure. The results show that larger inertia increases the saturation and interfacial length of the invading non-wetting fluid, and produces larger capillary pressure. Inertial effects are found to be minor for smaller capillary numbers.

Oilfield-produced water treatment using conventional and membrane-based technologies for beneficial reuse: A critical review

Ojo Samuel et al.

Summary: This article critically reviews the complex properties of oilfield produced water (OPW) and various treatment technologies. It emphasizes on membrane technologies and discusses further research directions and challenges. The study concludes that no single treatment method is highly effective for OPW treatment, but conventional membrane-based technologies are commonly used for oil rejection in OPW and oily wastewater.

Minimal Surfaces in Porous Materials: X-Ray Image-Based Measurement of the Contact Angle and Curvature in Gas Diffusion Layers to Design Optimal Performance of Fuel Cells

Mohammad Javad Shojaei et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the arrangement of fibers, water, and air in pore space by injecting water through gas diffusion layers with different percentages of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating. By utilizing high-resolution three-dimensional X-ray imaging, we analyze the contact angle and meniscus curvature once water reaches equilibrium. The results show that the amount of coating affects the average contact angle and water pressure at breakthrough, with a wide range of contact angles indicating a mixed-wet state. The presence of minimal surfaces suggests that the fluid phases are well connected, allowing for the simultaneous flow of two phases over a wide saturation range. These findings have implications for the design of porous materials.
