Pore-scale investigation on nonaqueous phase liquid dissolution and mass transfer in 2D and 3D porous media

Yingxue Hu et al.

Summary: Fluid-fluid interphase mass transfer in porous media is crucial for soil and groundwater remediation. Experimental studies revealed the dynamics of dissolution process and the impact of pore structure on entrapped NAPL. Results showed that the mass transfer coefficient is independent of concentration difference and the 3D packed bed had a higher overall mass transfer coefficient under Darcy flow conditions.

Effect of Saturation and Image Resolution on Representative Elementary Volume and Topological Quantification: An Experimental Study on Bentheimer Sandstone Using Micro-CT

Ruotong Huang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of the representative elementary volume (REV) in understanding porous media, showing how different wetting-phase saturations affect porosity, specific interfacial area, and topological measures. Results also emphasize the impact of image resolution and voxel size on REV analysis.

Quantification of solubility trapping in natural and engineered CO2 reservoirs

Rory Leslie et al.

Summary: Secure retention of CO2 in geological reservoirs is crucial for effective storage. Studies on natural analogues, engineered reservoirs, and models produce a wide range of estimates on the fraction of CO2 dissolved and the dissolution rate. Evidence suggests that solubility trapping is the principal storage mechanism after structural trapping.

Effects of Dissolution Fingering on Mass Transfer Rate in Three-Dimensional Porous Media

Anindityo Patmonoaji et al.

Summary: The study investigated dissolution mass transfer in porous media with different particle sizes and distributions using X-ray microcomputed tomography. It found that dissolution fingering has an effect on mass transfer coefficient, with a significant decrease observed when the porous media container diameter (Ly) is larger than the whole lambda. Validation experiments showed successful observation of dissolution fingers, with sizes comparable to theoretical predictions based on linear instability theory.
