Coordinating the Mechanisms of Action of Ferroptosis and the Photothermal Effect for Cancer Theranostics

Fantian Zeng et al.

Summary: Combination therapy based on different mechanisms of cell death has potential in tumor therapy. This study developed a cancer theranostic nanomedicine formula by considering the mechanisms of ferroptosis and the photothermal effect. The activated photothermal effect and enhanced radical formation of the Cro-Fe@BSA nanoparticles achieved maximum synergy in therapeutic effects and enabled safe and reliable cancer theranostics.

Iron excess affects release of neutrophil extracellular traps and reactive oxygen species but does not influence other functions of neutrophils

Weronika Kuzmicka et al.

Summary: Iron plays a significant role in the function of neutrophils, impacting the release of NETs. Holo-transferrin inhibits NETs release, while iron overload suppresses the production of NETs and ROS in neutrophils from HFE knockout mice and mice fed a high-iron diet.

Bioresponsive nano-antibacterials for H2S-sensitized hyperthermia and immunomodulation against refractory implant-related infections

Zheng Su et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand for nonantibiotic strategies to overcome drug resistance in bacterial biofilm infections. This study proposes a gas-sensitized hyperthermia strategy using a metal-organic framework (MOF)-sealed Prussian blue-based nanocarrier for efficient elimination of biofilms through H2S-induced thermal eradiation.

Summary: Ferroptosis provides insights into designing nanomedicines for cancer therapy. However, its efficacy is limited due to cancer cells' self-protective mechanisms. A nanoplatform, MPDA@Fe3O4-Era, is constructed to amplify reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) for enhanced ferrotherapy.

RNA thermoswitches modulate Staphylococcus aureus adaptation to ambient temperatures

Arancha Catalan-Moreno et al.

Summary: The production of cold shock proteins CspB and CspC from Staphylococcus aureus is controlled by two paralogous RNA thermoswitches, which adopt alternative RNA structures at different temperatures, affecting the translation process. Simultaneous deletion of these genes or their RNA thermoswitches significantly decreases the growth rate of the bacteria at lower temperatures.

Fighting Staphylococcus epidermidis Biofilm-Associated Infections: Can Iron Be the Key to Success?

Fernando Oliveira et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus epidermidis is an important commensal microorganism on human skin and mucosae, yet it can also cause severe infections in immunocompromised patients. Its ability to form biofilms makes infections difficult to treat. Research suggests that the bacterium's dependence on iron plays a key role in its pathogenicity.

Congener-Induced Sulfur-Related Metabolism Interference Therapy Promoted by Photothermal Sensitization for Combating Bacteria

Renke He et al.

Summary: Metabolic homeostasis is crucial for the survival of individual cells, and disrupting bacteria metabolic homeostasis can be an effective approach to eliminate infections. A novel therapy using the competitive interaction between selenium and sulfur has shown promising results in eradicating implant-associated infections. Proteomic studies have demonstrated the significant impact of the therapy on bacterial metabolic pathways.

The Bacterial Hsp90 Chaperone: Cellular Functions and Mechanism of Action

Sue Wickner et al.

Summary: Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a molecular chaperone that folds and remodels proteins, regulating the activity of substrate proteins. Bacterial Hsp90 collaborates with Hsp70 and its cochaperones for protein remodeling, while eukaryotic Hsp90 involves over 20 cochaperones in addition to Hsp70. Further exploration of the bacterial chaperone system may provide insights into the complex eukaryotic Hsp90 system.
