MXene-Supported, Atomic-Layered Iridium Catalysts Created by Nanoparticle Re-Dispersion for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Linxiu Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, an Ir-on-MXene catalyst with controlled morphology changing from nanoparticles to flattened atomic layers, and finally ultrathin layers and single atoms dispersed on MXene nanosheets, is presented. The Ir atomic layers show the highest activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline conditions and have better activity than single atoms, indicating that Ir atomic layers serve as the main active sites. Mechanism analysis reveals the unconventional electron transfer from MXene to Ir and suitable H* adsorption due to the nanoparticle re-dispersion process and moderate interaction between Ir atomic layers and the substrate.
