Recent developments in electrode materials for dual-ion batteries: Potential alternatives to conventional batteries

Heng-guo Wang et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries have been successful in consumer electronics and energy vehicles, but the shortage of lithium and cobalt resources, as well as the need for better performance and safety, have led to the development of more efficient battery systems. Dual-ion batteries, with their environmental friendliness, low cost, excellent safety, high work voltage, and high energy density, offer an alternative to conventional batteries. However, they face challenges such as limited capacity and shorter cycle life. Various strategies have been adopted to overcome these challenges and promising results have been reported.

Low-Cost Hypercrosslinked Polymers by Direct Knitting Strategy for Catalytic Applications

Yanlong Gu et al.

Summary: Direct knitting of nucleophilic arene monomers in the presence of electrophilic cross-linker is a cost-effective method for synthesizing porous organic polymers with hierarchical porous structure and suitable for catalysis. The wise selection of monomers and synergy between the HCP support and catalytically active species often lead to efficient tailor-made catalysts. The enthusiasm of researchers in using HCPs in catalysis research is increasing rapidly due to their excellent properties.

Benzene Ring Knitting Achieved by Ambient-Temperature Dehalogenation via Mechanochemical Ullmann-Type Reductive Coupling

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: A novel method using mechanochemical Ullmann-type reactions to promote direct aromatic ring knitting has been demonstrated to afford CPNs with high surface areas and mesoporous architecture under neat and ambient conditions. The versatility of this approach has been confirmed by successful construction of various CPNs and even highly crystalline graphite product, showing good electrochemical performance in lithium-ion batteries. This strategy expands the frontiers of CPN synthesis and provides new opportunities for their scalable applications.

Successive Storage of Cations and Anions by Ligands of π-d-Conjugated Coordination Polymers Enabling Robust Sodium-Ion Batteries

Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study constructed two-dimensional CCPs using inactive transition-metal ions as nodes to achieve high reversible capacity and remarkable capacity retention by storing cations and anions through redox reactions of only ligands. In contrast, CCPs with Cu2+ nodes showed poorer cyclability when both ligands and metal ions underwent redox reactions, emphasizing the importance of redox reactions of only ligands for long-term cycle life.

Balance cathode-active and anode-active groups in one conjugated polymer towards high-performance all-organic lithium-ion batteries

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: Balancing/maximizing abundant cathode-active groups (C=O, C=N) and anode-active groups (C=C), we designed and reported a polymer named Poly-BQ1, which can be used as both cathode and anode materials for high-performance all-organic symmetric Lithium-ion battery. By optimizing integration of redox-active C=O, C=N and C=C groups in a stable conjugated backbone and minimizing redox-inactive units, the all-organic battery using this single material exhibits the highest capacity (351.5 mA h g-1 at 50 mA g-1) among all previously reported all-organic batteries, with remarkable cycling stability (99.96% retention per cycle up to 400 cycles) and rate performance (203.4 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1).
