Patient-Specific Self-Powered Metamaterial Implants for Detecting Bone Healing Progress

Kaveh Barri et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the unmet need for smart medical implants and proposes the concept of self-aware implants to create a new generation of multifunctional metamaterial implantable devices. The integration of nano energy harvesting and mechanical metamaterial design paradigms enables these implants to respond to their environment, empower themselves, and self-monitor their condition.

Accelerated biodegradation of iron-based implants via tantalum-implanted surface nanostructures

Min-Kyu Lee et al.

Summary: In recent years, pure iron has gained attention as a biodegradable orthopedic implant material. However, its slow and uneven degradation in physiological conditions limits its practical applications. In this study, researchers developed a novel approach using nanostructured surface topography and galvanic reaction to achieve uniform and accelerated degradation of pure iron implants. Results showed that this approach effectively enhanced the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the implants, demonstrating its potential for long-term biosafety and clinical efficacy.

Additive manufacturing of the core template for the fabrication of an artificial blood vessel: the relationship between the extruded deposition diameter and the filament/nozzle transition ratio

Seong Je Park et al.

Summary: An artificial blood vessel with a tubular structure was manufactured using FDM technology, where the inner core was removed via sonication and hydrogen peroxide. The relationship between extruded deposition diameter and filament/nozzle transition ratio had a significant impact on the final product quality, while the PDMS displayed good chemical stability in hydrogen peroxide.

A Facile and Rapid Approach to Lotus-Seedpod-Structured Electronic Skin for Monitoring Diverse Physical Stimuli

Yanhao Huang et al.

Summary: This study reports a method for preparing a sensing layer with lotus-seedpod-like structures using multi-melt multi-injection molding technology. The sensitivity of the fabricated e-skin is significantly affected by the micro-pits and asperities formed on the surface of the peeled skin layer, which depend on the silica mass fraction in the composites.
