Summary: The family Adenoviridae consists of non-enveloped viruses with linear dsDNA genomes and medium-sized icosahedral capsids. Adenoviruses have been found in vertebrates from fish to humans. The family is divided into six genera, each of which is more prevalent in certain animal groups. The outcome of infection can range from subclinical to lethal disease.

Novel gammaherpesvirus associated with primary gastric T-cell lymphoma in a free-ranging giant armadillo in Brazil

Summary: The number of viral-associated neoplasms reported in wildlife has increased over the past few decades, with one case being a primary gastric T-cell lymphoma in a free-ranging giant armadillo in the Brazilian Pantanal infected by a novel gammaherpesvirus. This study suggests that the herpesvirus may be a plausible cause of the neoplasm in this species, but the implications for the giant armadillo remain uncertain. Further research is needed to assess the real significance of CiHV-1 and its potential oncogenic role in this species.

Neoplasms and novel gammaherpesviruses in critically endangered captive European minks (Mustela lutreola)

Summary: This study identified two potentially novel gammaherpesvirus species infecting the European mink, as well as described neoplasms and concurrent herpesvirus infection in the species for the first time. The occurrence of neural lymphoma with intralesional syncytia and herpesviral inclusions in the minks is unique among mammals, suggesting a potential role of gammaherpesviruses in the pathogenesis of these tumors. Further research is needed to understand the oncogenic properties of gammaherpesviruses in European minks and their epidemiology in the wild population.
