The Piroplasmida Babesia, Cytauxzoon, and Theileria in farm and companion animals: species compilation, molecular phylogeny, and evolutionary insights

Leonhard Schnittger et al.

Summary: The order Piroplasmida, consisting of Babesia, Cytauxzoon and Theileria, are tick-transmitted hemoprotozoans causing serious impact in domestic animals and humans. International research is conducted to identify, classify and develop treatments for these parasites. This review presents a compilation of piroplasmid species, isolates and species complexes that infect domestic mammals and demonstrates that there may be more piroplasmid parasites than vertebrate host species. The study also reveals insights into the evolutionary patterns and host-parasite relationships of these parasites.

Serological Survey and Molecular Characterization of Theileria annulata in Sicilian Cattle

Valeria Gargano et al.

Summary: Tropical theileriosis is a tick-borne disease caused by hemoprotozoan parasites with significant veterinary and economic impact globally. A study in Sicily analyzed the molecular epidemiology of Theileria annulata in cows, revealing limited geographical and temporal genetic variability of the parasite. This information will be valuable for improving control and prevention strategies for theileriosis.

Epidemiology, haematology and molecular characterization of haemoprotozoon and rickettsial organisms causing infections in cattle of Jammu region, North India

Rabjot Kaur et al.

Summary: The study aimed to establish the prevalence, epidemiology, and molecular characterization of major haemoprotozoons and rickettsia of cattle in the Jammu region, North India. The prevalence based on microscopy was 12.9%, while PCR recorded 30.22% animals positive for haemoparasitic infections. Hematological alterations in diseased animals affected productivity. Genetic characterization of Babesia bigemina, Anaplasma marginale, and Theileria annulata provided representative data of the isolates circulating in the region.
