Influence of the nitrogen content on the structure and properties of MoNbTaVW high entropy alloy thin films

Ao Xia et al.

Summary: The influence of nitrogen incorporation on the chemical composition, structure, mechanical, and electrical properties of refractory (MoNbTaVW)(1-x)N-x high entropy alloy thin films is investigated in this study. The structural change from body centered cubic to face centered cubic with increasing nitrogen content resulted in increased hardness but also material embrittlement. The films were synthesized by two different physical vapor deposition methods onto silicon and polyimide substrates.

A new thermal analysis model with three heat conduction layers in the nuclear waste repository

Xiangyun Zhou et al.

Summary: A mathematical model for three layer media with different thermal conductivities was presented to analyze the three-dimensional heat conduction in the repository. Analytical solutions for temperature distribution in different layers were derived and a parametric study was conducted to assess the effects of geometry dimension and thermal conductivity on thermal performance. The results showed that the thickness of the bentonite pellet layer significantly increased the peak buffer layer temperature due to its low thermal conductivity.

Effects of elemental segregation on microstructural evolution and local mechanical properties in a dynamically deformed CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloy

M. N. Hasan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of elemental segregation on local hardness and microstructural evolution induced by high strain-rate deformation in a CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloy. Mn and Ni tend to segregate to interdendritic boundaries during solidification and this segregation is further intensified by dynamic deformation. The increase in local stacking fault energy in Mn and Ni enriched areas leads to a reduction in local hardness, altering the deformation mechanisms and hindering the propagation of adiabatic shear bands.

Single-phase duodenary high-entropy fluorite/pyrochlore oxides with an order-disorder transition

Andrew J. Wright et al.

Summary: A series of duodenary high-entropy oxides containing eleven metal cations have been investigated in this study, showing single high-entropy phases with order-disorder transitions and reduced thermal conductivity as composition changes. The study suggests a new route to tailor high-entropy ceramics by controlling cation ordering vs. disordering, with abrupt increases in Young's modulus at low mixing concentrations near endmembers.

Spontaneously formed nanostructures in double perovskite rare-earth tantalates for thermal barrier coatings

Takafumi Ogawa et al.

Summary: The study shows that YbTa3O9 with spontaneously formed nanostructures has a thermal conductivity lower than commercial-level TBC materials due to periodic strain between boundaries. Additionally, YbTa3O9 exhibits thermal expansion characteristics similar to 7YSZ, suggesting its potential as a TBC material.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity, Multiband Electronic Structure and High Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in TlCuSe

Wenwen Lin et al.

Summary: TlCuSe is an intrinsic p-type semiconductor with ultralow thermal conductivity and high power factor, resulting in a high figure of merit ZT. The weak chemical bonds and large atomic mass contribute to the low sound velocity and anharmonicity, which helps to suppress lattice thermal conductivity.
