Growth and structural transitions of core-shell nanorods in nanocrystalline Al-Ni-Y

Tianjiao Lei et al.

Summary: Unique nanorod precipitates with a core-shell structure are found to nucleate from the grain boundaries of a bulk nanocrystalline Al-Ni-Y alloy. The local structure and chemistry of these features during annealing are studied. As annealing time increases, more nanorods transform to an ordered structure while the shell chemistry transitions from Y-rich to Ni-rich. The correlation between the nanorods and amorphous complexions is observed.

Amorphous complexions alter the tensile failure of nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys

Jenna L. Wardini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of interfacial structural disorder on plasticity and failure of nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys through in situ scanning electron microscopy tensile deformation experiments. The results show that structural disorder at the grain boundaries can be beneficial for improving the ductility of nanocrystalline metals.

Bulk nanocrystalline Al alloys with hierarchical reinforcement structures via grain boundary segregation and complexion formation

Tianjiao Lei et al.

Summary: The study successfully fabricated three fully dense bulk nanocrystalline Al alloys with small grain sizes using a powder metallurgy approach. These alloys show excellent mechanical properties and strength. Microstructural characterization reveals that dopant elements segregate to grain boundaries, promoting the formation of amorphous complexions, which contribute to the stability of the materials.

Disordered interfaces enable high temperature thermal stability and strength in a nanocrystalline aluminum alloy

Glenn H. Balbus et al.

Summary: Intentional design of interface disorder, co-segregation of Ce and Ni, and formation of amorphous intergranular films contribute to exceptional thermal stability and elevated temperature strength in a ternary nanocrystalline Al-Ni-Ce alloy. This highlights the efficacy of promoting disorder in alloy design and discovery for outstanding mechanical performance at high homologous temperatures.

Solid solution strengthening mechanism in high pressure die casting Al-Ce-Mg alloys

Bo Hu et al.

Summary: The introduction of cerium promoted nucleation of alpha-Al grains and Al11Ce3 phase served as the heterogeneous nucleation substrate of alpha-Al due to small lattice mismatch. The lattice constant of alpha-Al increased with increasing Mg content, enhancing yield strength and hardness due to solid solution strengthening effect. Mg atom solid solution improved work hardening capacity by increasing work hardening exponent and reducing stacking fault energy, promoting dislocation tangles and networks in the alpha-Al matrix.
