Evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties during annealing of heavily rolled AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy

Adrianna Lozinko et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of a 90% cold-rolled AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy undergo changes during annealing at 800 degrees C. Recrystallization occurs faster in the FCC phase compared to the B2 regions, resulting in increased grain size. Partially recrystallized samples produced by annealing exhibit a combination of high yield strength and good ductility.

Mechanism of microstructure evolution and spheroidization in ultrafine lamellar CoCrFeNi(Nb0.5/Ta0.4) eutectic high entropy alloys upon hot deformation

Barnasree Chanda et al.

Summary: This paper reports the microstructure evolution and spheroidization of ultrafine lamellar high entropy alloys (EHEAs) under hot deformation. The experiments on CoCrFeNiNb0.5 and CoCrFeNiTa0.4 alloys at different temperatures reveal their different yield strengths and strain hardening behaviors, as well as deformation softening at high temperatures. In addition, the microstructural coarsening and lamellar instabilities during the evolution process are characterized.

Strength and plasticity of lamellar vs. fibrous eutectic Mg-Al nanocomposites: An in-situ microcompression study

Soodabeh Azadehranjbar et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys are appealing for automotive and aerospace applications due to their low density and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, their current use is limited by low strength and poor formability at ambient temperatures. Two-phase nanostructured materials offer a promising solution to enhance the mechanical properties of magnesium alloys, with either fibrous or lamellar morphologies formed via eutectic transformation. During mechanical testing, the lamellar morphology showed superior strength and plasticity compared to the fibrous morphology and pure magnesium. The higher strength in the fibrous eutectic came at the expense of lower plasticity, while the high plasticity of the lamellar morphology was attributed to factors such as high dislocation activity and role of alpha layers in restricting shear instabilities.

Summary: The addition of Cu element into CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy leads to metastable phase separation and the formation of obvious segregation zones. With the increase of undercooling, the dendritic growth velocity of the alloy increases, but it gradually declines with the enhancement of Cu content.

Mechanical Behavior of Al-Al2Cu-Si and Al-Al2Cu Eutectic Alloys

Qian Lei et al.

Summary: This study utilized laser rapid solidification technique to refine the microstructure of ternary Al-Cu-Si and binary Al-Cu eutectic alloys, leading to significantly enhanced compressive strength and improved plasticity compared to the conventional casting alloys. The improved mechanical properties were attributed to the microstructural refinement and hierarchical eutectic morphology achieved through laser remelting.

Summary: The effects of Nb content on microstructures and mechanical properties in Co-free CrFeNi2Nbx alloys were investigated. Increasing Nb content led to changes in microstructures and improved mechanical properties, with a reduction in ductility. The CrFeNi2Nb0.6 alloy achieved a high maximum fracture strength.

In situ study of non-equilibrium solidification of CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy and CrFeNi and CoCrNi ternary suballoys

Angelo F. Andreoli et al.

Summary: The solidification behavior of the CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy, ternary CrFeNi, and CoCrNi medium-entropy suballoys was studied using high-speed video and synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques. The results showed that the crystal-growth velocities of these alloys were comparable to Fe-Ni and Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, indicating similar crystallization kinetics. The effect of melt undercooling on the microstructure of solidified samples was also analyzed and discussed.

Naishalkumar Shah et al.

Summary: The study focused on the CALPHAD guided design of a hypo-eutectic high entropy alloy with a dual-phase microstructure, which exhibited excellent high-temperature mechanical properties. The addition of alloying elements and thermal effects led to the formation of multiple fine precipitates, extending the usable temperature range of the alloy. Under room temperature conditions, the alloy showed good mechanical performance and at high temperatures, there were various kinds of precipitates in the FCC solution phase.

Design and characterization of eutectic refractory high entropy alloys

N. Yurchenko et al.

Summary: Eutectic alloys with near-equilibrium structures, impressive strength-ductility trade-off, and perfect castability were designed using a CALPHAD approach. Alloying with Cr and Al induced the formation of hypoeutectic, eutectic, and hypereutectic structures due to Laves phase precipitation, improving the mechanical characteristics of the alloys. The stable B2/C14 Laves phase microstructure after plastic deformation at high temperatures and the precipitation of a new D0(19) structured phase were observed, indicating new approaches for designing RHEAs with promising mechanical properties.
