Energy analysis of a detonation combustor with a bladeless turbine, a propulsion unit for subsonic to hypersonic flight

James Braun et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an energy conversion unit that can extract power and increase thrust from high subsonic to hypersonic flows. The energy transfer is achieved through a wavy hub surface, and the feasibility of this technology is verified through numerical simulations and cycle analysis. Furthermore, energy extraction from the highly unsteady exhaust of rotating detonation combustors without an additional intermediate diffuser or nozzle is also demonstrated.

Spinning pulsed detonation in rotating detonation engine

Dawen Shen et al.

Summary: This article presents experiments on a rotating detonation engine fueled by hydrogen and air, where a spinning pulsed detonation mode is identified for the first time. This mode is characterized by spiral and pulsed features, including single-wave and two-wave patterns. The inception, sustenance, and transition of the mode are described and analyzed, and a propagation mechanism is proposed based on analogy with other detonation phenomena.

Symbiosis of deflagration and detonation in one jet system - A hybrid detonation engine

Mohamad Assad et al.

Summary: For the first time, a model of a hybrid detonation engine has been developed and experimentally tested, showing that detonation mode occurs soon after start in jet fuel-oxygen mixture and can be enhanced with air supply.

Symbiosis of deflagration and detonation in one jet system - A hybrid detonation engine

Mohamad Assad et al.

Summary: For the first time, a model of a hybrid detonation engine has been developed and experimentally tested, consisting of a rotating detonation module and a turbojet engine. The conditions for detonation mode in fuel-oxygen mixtures have been studied, with detonation waves initially at low velocities but accelerated to high speeds with air supply contributing to intensification.

A rotating detonation engine using methane-ethylene mixture and air

Yuhui Wang et al.

Summary: Hydrocarbon fuels typically have higher methane numbers than hydrogen, making it harder to detonate the mixture of hydrocarbon fuels and air at room temperatures in non-premixed engines. Ethylene-air rotating detonation operations have been successful, but detonating methane-ethylene-air mixture at room temperatures is more challenging due to methane's chemical stability.

Numerical study of rotating detonation onset in engines

E. V. Mikhalchenko et al.

Summary: The study investigated the modeling of a three-dimensional rotation detonation engine combustion chamber supplied with a hydrogen-oxygen mixture. Different modes of fuel and oxidizer supply, as well as types of combustible mixture, were studied. The results showed that stable detonation modes could be obtained under various supply conditions, and the thrust characteristics were analyzed.

Effects of slot injection on detonation wavelet characteristics in a rotating detonation engine

Chian Yan et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of spatially discrete slot injection of reactants on detonation wavelets in a rotating detonation engine (RDE). The study found that injection conditions and chemical sensitivity have a similar influence on rotating detonation wavelets compared to previous studies on mini-nozzle rotating detonation waves. Mass flow rate and inhomogeneity generated by slot injection play a key role in the self-sustained rotating detonation and its frontal structure.
